Alien vs. X-Men Brings Xenomorph Horror to Marvel

Marvel is sending the X-Men into a deadly science-fiction nightmare this September. Alien vs. X-Men follows last year’s Alien vs. Avengers by placing the Children of the Atom against the Xenomorphs, one of cinema’s most relentless extraterrestrial threats.

A dangerous search for a Phoenix egg

The limited series is written by veteran X-Men author Kieron Gillen and drawn by Geraldo Borges. Its central story begins when the team searches for a Phoenix egg, only to discover something much more dangerous. After bringing that threat back to Earth, the mutants face consequences that could be fatal.

A separate four-part story by Chris Claremont will expand the crossover further, setting the Xenomorphs against the Brood. Marvel’s own hive-minded alien species is known for infecting hosts and killing its victims, making the pairing especially grim.

Which X-Men appear in the preview?

Marvel’s preview pages appear to show the team’s first encounter with the aliens while they are still in their egg stage. Wolverine and Jamie Madrox, also known as Multiple Man, are trapped by alien growth, with Madrox then attacked by a facehugger.

The line-up includes Kitty Pryde, Beast, Emma Frost, Wolverine and Cyclops. Their costumes and the team’s make-up suggest that the story is set during the era associated with Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men.

Storm may be the story’s Ripley

Gillen has explained that the extraterrestrial elements already present in this period of X-Men history made it a natural fit for an Alien crossover. In an interview with Collider’s preview, he also highlighted the freedom offered by a story outside established canon.

That freedom allows the creative team to embrace the horror more fully, including the possibility that popular mutants may not survive. The characters can still behave like heroes, but the story is built around the idea that their luck can run out.

Storm has not appeared in the promotional material released so far, but Gillen identified her as one of the most important characters in the series. He compared her role to Ellen Ripley’s, suggesting she could become the central protagonist and perhaps the survivor of the X-Men’s encounter with the Xenomorphs.

Storm’s powers created a challenge for the creative team, although Gillen said they found a solution that makes her involvement feel earned.

Release date

Alien vs. X-Men #1 is scheduled for release on 16 September. A new Marvel preview offers a closer look at the crossover’s direction.
