An Australian Airbnb host allegedly tried to claim 1,700 Australian dollars (US$1,183) from a guest using an AI-generated image of a severely flooded toilet as supposed evidence of property damage.

Spotted by PC Gamer and discussed on Reddit’s /isthisAI, the case involved a host who claimed a guest had blocked the toilet. The image purportedly showed water spilling over the seat and covering the bathroom floor.

The image raised immediate questions

The photograph was far from convincing. Reddit user u/FurinaDeFontaine pointed to several details that appeared inconsistent with a real plumbing disaster. Streams of water seemed to run from the toilet without creating any visible splashes, while the water remained confined to the bathroom despite appearing deep enough to escape under the door.

There was also a basic structural problem: unless the bathroom floor sat substantially lower than the rest of the property, water at that level should have spread into neighbouring rooms. The bathroom was reportedly upstairs, meaning a genuine flood of that size could also have caused serious damage to the ceiling below—potentially far beyond the value of the claim.

Google watermark added another clue

Commenters identified a Google SynthID watermark in the image. That signal suggested the picture was probably generated with Gemini or another Google generative-AI tool, rather than captured by a phone inside the rental.

The incident is a useful reminder to check evidence carefully when money or responsibility is disputed online. The same habit applies when comparing product photographs, specifications and claims while using an arcade machine buying guide or researching arcade machines. Images can look persuasive while still failing basic tests of scale, physics or consistency.

The reimbursement request was rejected

FurinaDeFontaine later said the matter had been resolved in the guest’s favour. In an update the following day, the Reddit user wrote that the case had been reviewed and the requested reimbursement had been deemed ineligible.

The guest also said they had not used toilet paper during the stay, although they wondered whether someone else may have done so and whether the underlying plumbing issue, if any, could have been genuine. The available account does not establish what actually happened to the toilet; it does show why questionable digital evidence should not be accepted at face value.
