Minor spoilers for Clayface follow.

Clayface has reached cinemas, but Aaron Paul’s contribution is far briefer than early casting news suggested. The Breaking Bad and Dispatch actor appears in only one scene in the finished film, despite originally being attached to a substantially larger part.

Director James Watkins has explained that most of Paul’s material was removed during the film’s development and post-production. The remaining appearance is short, but it connects directly to Matt Hagen’s family history and the revenge that drives the story.

Who does Aaron Paul play in Clayface?

Paul plays Matt Hagen’s abusive father. During the film’s Vesuvius sequence, Clayface takes on Paul’s appearance before killing a member of the Szabo gang—the person responsible for killing Hagen’s father.

That detail can be easy to miss because Paul’s role is presented as a brief transformation rather than a conventional supporting performance. His face appears during one of the movie’s key moments, while the larger character arc that would have given the cameo more context is largely absent from the theatrical cut.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Watkins said the production considered how strongly Hagen should be defined by his past. One version of the story focused more directly on the idea of inherited wrongdoing—the “sins of the father”—before the filmmakers moved towards a broader and more relatable theme of revenge.

Watkins described the final idea as a universal response to feeling wronged: people may carry trauma and anger, yet ordinary life often leaves them unable to act on those emotions.

That change appears to have helped make Hagen a more layered figure in the completed film. It also means Paul’s surviving scene can feel slightly unclear without the knowledge that he is portraying Hagen’s father.

Even so, identifying Paul in the sequence adds emotional weight to a moment already regarded as one of the film’s strongest. Viewers interested in how major productions reshape characters during editing may also enjoy the wider stories collected in RETROCADE’s arcade news and editorial coverage.

Could Aaron Paul’s deleted scenes return?

There is no confirmed release of the deleted material. However, the cut scenes could provide a clearer explanation of Hagen’s relationship with his father and show why Paul was initially considered for a more important role.

Another possibility is that DC Studios could bring Paul back in a future project. His largely removed part in Clayface leaves open the prospect of recasting him as a more prominent character later, although no such plan has been announced.

For now, Paul’s appearance remains a compact piece of character history hidden inside a major transformation scene. It is a reminder that even a recognisable performance can be reduced to a few seconds when a film’s themes and structure change during production.
