A new report claims Bethesda could finally confirm the name of The Elder Scrolls 6 as soon as next month, reviving a long-running fan theory about the game’s subtitle.

The reported name is Sentinel. Sources cited by The Verge say an official announcement may arrive nearly eight years after the game was revealed at E3 2018.

That timing would also place the announcement around 15 years after Skyrim, the most recent mainline entry in the series. For more gaming and industry updates, visit RETROCADE’s arcade news and blog section.

The proposed subtitle matches speculation that circulated earlier this year, as well as a clue shared by Xbox head Asha Sharma in August. Sharma suggested that the hidden title contained eight letters while discussing a playthrough:

Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.

Hammerfell could be the setting

The same report supports earlier rumours that Sentinel would focus on a single region of Tamriel, following the approach used by previous Elder Scrolls games. The region named in the report is Hammerfell, which has appeared in Elder Scrolls spin-offs but has not previously led its own mainline game.

Its reported story would explore the “history of the Elder Scrolls” and help players uncover the secrets of the series’ mysterious ancient artefacts. Until Bethesda confirms the details, the title, setting and story description remain unannounced information rather than established features.

A long wait for concrete details

Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls 6 unusually early and has offered very little substantial information since then. Bethesda chief Todd Howard has discussed the project in broad terms on several occasions, but has not provided a detailed reveal.

In July, Howard said it was too soon to discuss the game’s platforms. His response came amid questions about whether Xbox might make the series exclusive following Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda and changes in the company’s console strategy.

Also in July, Bethesda developers reportedly warned that mass layoffs across Xbox could have a “substantial and cascading effect” on development and team morale. A formal title announcement would therefore provide an important update on a project that has spent years largely out of the spotlight.
