Microsoft’s Xbox division is reportedly reshaping its approach to film and television adaptations after negotiations with Netflix broke down over the value of its game franchises.
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a new department focused on developing entertainment projects across different media. The team may have emerged partly in response to a failed agreement that would have given Netflix broad exclusive adaptation rights to Xbox properties.
Netflix reportedly offered $500 million
The proposed arrangement was said to cover a large portion of Xbox’s intellectual property for seven years. Netflix reportedly offered newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma $500 million for those exclusive rights.
Sharma allegedly sought to increase the figure to $800 million. Netflix then withdrew its offer, ending discussions before a final agreement could be reached.
The reported negotiations come as Microsoft continues expanding the screen presence of its game catalogue. Alongside an upcoming animated Minecraft project, Netflix is developing a Diablo series.
A smaller-deal strategy may follow
Xbox has described Netflix as a valued partner and said it has received record-breaking interest in adapting its properties. However, the reported change in strategy would see Microsoft pursue several more focused agreements with different production companies instead of granting one platform such extensive exclusivity.
It remains unconfirmed how closely that approach is connected to XP, the newly announced cross-media development department. The unit could nevertheless help Microsoft coordinate projects and recover some of the momentum lost when the Netflix proposal collapsed.
For the wider games industry, screen adaptations offer a way to extend the commercial life of expensive franchises. Successful television and film projects can introduce a game series to new audiences and send viewers back to the original releases. Xbox already has adaptation successes
Microsoft is familiar with the benefits and risks of this strategy. Warner Bros.’ Minecraft film and Amazon’s Fallout series became major successes, while Paramount’s Halo adaptation did not achieve the same cultural impact.
The contrast matters as publishers decide which properties deserve a large production budget. A recognisable name can attract attention, but the adaptation still needs to connect with audiences beyond the existing player base.
Which Xbox games could reach Netflix?
The specific games discussed during the Netflix negotiations have not been identified. Microsoft’s catalogue includes major franchises such as Doom, The Elder Scrolls, Gears of War, Call of Duty and Space Quest, leaving Netflix with a broad range of possible genres and audiences.
Netflix has already developed screen projects based on Cyberpunk, League of Legends, The Witcher and Castlevania. The service is also expected to hold streaming rights for a live-action Zelda project next year.
For arcade fans, adaptations can also renew interest in older game worlds and characters. That renewed attention often reaches collectors and home players looking for dedicated arcade machines, compact cabinets and restoration projects.
