Mass Effect: Universe, the cancelled fifth mainline Mass Effect project, was reportedly planned as a more tactical and character-driven science-fiction adventure set centuries after Commander Shepard’s story.

The project was being developed by BioWare before EA closed the studio, laid off its staff and cancelled the game. An internal trailer made with pre-production material later surfaced, offering a glimpse of the abandoned direction and apparently showing what could have been the series’ first male Quarian squadmate.

The leaked information came from YouTuber Dantics, who said he had contributed feedback during development through a group referred to as the “Mass Effect Council”. A later report citing an anonymous source claimed that the details were accurate, although they remain unconfirmed publicly.

A Mass Effect story set 600 years after the Reaper War

Mass Effect: Universe would reportedly have taken place more than 600 years after the original trilogy. That timeframe matched the journey from the Milky Way to the Andromeda galaxy in Mass Effect: Andromeda, reinforcing earlier hints that the next game could connect both parts of the franchise.

Rather than repeating the galaxy-wide invasion seen in Mass Effect 3, the proposed sequel would have centred on a tense interstellar Cold War. Three major powers were said to shape the setting:

  • Humanity, the Krogan, Batarians and allied groups.
  • The Council races, apparently including the Asari, Turians and Salarians.
  • The Geth, emerging as an independent superpower.

The concept also reportedly included Geth-built megastructures, an ongoing connection between the Milky Way and Andromeda, and a concealed adversary operating within the wider political conflict.

Custom N7 agent with stealth and hacking abilities

The player character would have been a customisable N7 agent. Dantics described the protagonist as a blend of John Wick and James Bond rather than simply a heavily armed soldier, suggesting a stronger focus on precision, infiltration and close-quarters combat.

Missions were reportedly designed by hand, following the approach used in the original trilogy, but with more freedom inspired by Hitman. Players could have chosen different routes through each location, while brutal close-range executions added a harsher edge to combat.

An experimental technology implanted in the agent would have provided a distinct gameplay advantage. Reported abilities included seeing through walls, identifying systems, hacking machinery, manipulating the environment and remotely triggering hazards. The concept was compared with the hacking and environmental interactions found in Cyberpunk 2077.

Squadmates, romance and Liara’s return

The leaked outline also suggested that squadmates could clash with one another, continuing the series’ interest in competing personalities and conflicting loyalties. Romance was reportedly intended to remain an important part of the experience rather than being toned down.

Liara was said to return as an exceptionally powerful Asari Matriarch. Shepard’s legacy would also have remained intact regardless of which ending players chose in the original trilogy.

Reported details included:

  • A setting more than 600 years after the Reaper War.
  • A customisable N7 protagonist.
  • Three major galactic factions.
  • An alliance involving humans, Krogans and Batarians.
  • A separate Council-race alliance.
  • The Geth as a third major power.
  • A galactic Cold War instead of another Reaper invasion.
  • Geth-built megastructures.
  • Links between the Milky Way and Andromeda.
  • Experimental implants enabling hacking and environmental manipulation.
  • Handcrafted missions with flexible approaches.
  • Close-range executions and potential squadmate conflict.
  • Romance planned as a significant feature.
  • Liara returning as a powerful Asari Matriarch.

Some elements fit with previous teasers and the material shown in the leaked trailer, while others could simply reflect familiar themes from the Mass Effect universe. Until more members of the reported feedback group confirm the information, the details should be treated as an account of an abandoned project rather than a confirmed blueprint for the series’ future.
