Electronic Arts is reportedly shutting down BioWare, cutting roughly 400 jobs and ending early development on the next Mass Effect game. BioWare confirmed the studio’s closure in a social-media statement dated October 21, 2026.
“Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”
BioWare’s announcement can be viewed in the studio’s October 21, 2026 post, which marks the end of a developer associated with some of the most recognised story-driven games in the industry.
A major change for Electronic Arts
The closure follows Electronic Arts’ reported move into private ownership through a $55 billion buyout involving a Saudi Arabian private investment fund and Affinity Partners, the private equity firm owned by Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
The transaction left EA carrying $18 billion in debt. Company executives also committed to finding $700 million in annual savings, leading to multiple rounds of cost-cutting. BioWare’s shutdown is the most significant consequence yet for a studio that once represented EA’s narrative-focused ambitions.

BioWare’s difficult live-service history
EA acquired BioWare in 2007. Four years later, the studio entered the live-service space with the massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic. It tried the model again with Anthem in 2019.
Anthem became a financial disappointment after a troubled production and a buggy launch. Following that failure, BioWare moved away from plans to make Dragon Age: The Veilguard a live-service and multiplayer title. The game was instead released as a single-player experience, returning the series to its established format.
That change was not enough to secure the studio’s future. BioWare faced repeated layoffs before and after The Veilguard launched, while EA said the game’s sales had fallen short of expectations.
The end of a celebrated studio
BioWare built its reputation through influential role-playing games including Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The cancellation of the next Mass Effect project now ends the early development of another entry in that long-running science-fiction series.
The news is a reminder that beloved game franchises remain vulnerable when publishers restructure around debt, savings targets and a smaller group of priority projects. EA’s revised priorities
Alongside BioWare’s closure, an EA staff letter reportedly confirmed the cancellation of Project Lotus, a project connected to The Sims. EA will instead concentrate on another project, code-named Evergreen.
The company’s stated priorities now include its sports franchises, Apex Legends, and projects based on Marvel and Star Wars. BioWare’s closure leaves those areas at the centre of EA’s next phase while ending more than three decades of work from one of the games industry’s best-known role-playing studios.
