Gears of War: E-Day was targeted by a distributed denial-of-service attack over the weekend, causing login problems, disconnections and other online service interruptions.

The Coalition confirms online disruption

Developer The Coalition addressed the incident through the Gears Community account on Sunday night. The studio said the newly launched Microsoft title had been affected by attacks aimed at its online services.

Earlier today, some players experienced intermittent disconnects, login issues, or other service disruptions in Gears of War: E-Day. These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services.

The Coalition said its teams would continue monitoring and mitigating the activity, with further updates promised if there were significant changes. The studio also thanked players for their patience and understanding. The public statement was posted on October 12, 2026.

What a DDoS attack does

A DDoS attack attempts to overwhelm servers with a large volume of requests. That can make it difficult or impossible for legitimate players to connect, sign in or remain online.

These attacks are a relatively basic form of disruption, but online operators can often block or reduce their impact after detecting the activity. The Coalition appeared to have brought the immediate situation under control within several hours, while continuing to monitor its services.

A difficult launch period

The disruption arrived at a challenging point for Gears of War: E-Day, one of Microsoft’s larger releases of 2026. Earlier reports suggested that the game had not reached its expected sales performance despite receiving strong reviews.

Those reports estimated fewer than 250,000 copies sold during the first week, including approximately 62,000 on Xbox. The figures do not capture the full player audience, however, as an estimated 1.7 million people were playing through Game Pass.

Why was E-Day targeted?

The reason for the attack has not been established. Possible explanations discussed around the game include hostility towards Microsoft over its substantial job cuts during 2026, concerns about the company’s continuing support for Israel during the Gaza conflict, and claims from some critics that the latest Gears release is “woke”. None of these possibilities has been confirmed as the motive.
