Stephen King’s Talisman Trilogy Finally Reaches Its Conclusion

Other Worlds Than These is the long-awaited third book in Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman saga. The new novel continues Jack Sawyer’s journey across connected worlds, more than four decades after the original book appeared.

King is one of the world’s best-known novelists, so even his less familiar works rarely stay obscure for long. This release, however, returns to one of his most distinctive shared universes: the fantasy-horror setting created with the late Peter Straub.

Other Worlds Than These is available now. It arrives just over 25 years after Black House, the previous instalment, and expands the trilogy’s links to King’s wider Dark Tower mythology.

The story that started it all

The Talisman takes place in 1981 and follows 12-year-old Jack Sawyer. His mother, Lily Cavanaugh, is a former “Queen of the B-Movies” who is dying from terminal lung cancer. After moving with Jack from Los Angeles to a tourist town in New Hampshire, Lily also tries to escape Morgan Sloat, her late husband’s ruthless and suspicious business partner.

Jack meets Speedy, a local maintenance worker who introduces him to the Territories, a magical counterpart to Earth. Most people have a duplicate, or “twinner”, in that realm. Jack is unusual because his Territories counterpart has already died.

Lily’s twinner is Queen Laura, who is suffering from the same illness. Speedy tells Jack that a powerful object in the Territories’ version of California could save both women. With the ability to move between worlds, Jack begins a dangerous journey across the United States to find the Talisman.

From Black House to a final adventure

Published in 2001, Black House moves the action to French Landing, Wisconsin. Jack is now an adult and a former LAPD homicide detective who has taken early retirement.

A string of child abductions draws Jack back into investigative work. The crimes are connected to both the Territories and the Dark Tower, and Jack must find the latest missing child before the Tower falls and existence itself is destroyed.

King and Straub wrote the earlier books by alternating sections. Straub would work for a time before passing the manuscript to King. King later said that Straub was responsible for the idea of connecting Black House to the Dark Tower books.

During a 2010 Reddit AMA, Straub explained that the first outline for The Talisman was developed in person at his office in Westport, Connecticut. Later drafts were written face to face or exchanged through a modem.

What the new book explores

King and Straub had discussed a third book soon after Black House, but scheduling difficulties kept the project stalled for roughly 25 years. Shortly before Straub died in 2022, he sent King a lengthy letter about the novel that became Other Worlds Than These.

King completed the book alone, drawing on Straub’s notes alongside his own ideas. The story places an older Jack against a rampaging group of infected teenagers on Earth while he confronts the Gullet, a threatening force from the Territories.

King’s official website provides the basic premise. A preview published in Esquire also includes the first chapter, although it reveals an important part of Black House’s ending. Reading that novel first is advisable for anyone avoiding spoilers.

The first edition includes 38 black-and-white illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez, who previously worked with King on Fairy Tale in 2002.

Why the trilogy still feels current

A screen adaptation of The Talisman has been in development for more than 40 years. Steven Spielberg has held the film rights through Universal Pictures for decades and has made several attempts to bring the story to film or television.

Amblin Entertainment developed a six-hour miniseries for TNT around 2009, but that version was abandoned. Netflix later attached Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer to a television adaptation, though the deal had fallen apart by December 2025.

critical role hed

The book’s parallel-world structure now recalls properties such as Silent Hill and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Its unsettling transitional spaces, particularly in Black House, also resemble the modern fascination with liminal horror, including Exit 8 and The Backrooms.

That may explain why the series remains relevant. Rather than feeling dated, its ideas can seem like an early version of concepts that later became common across horror, fantasy and science fiction.

A long-awaited ending

Other Worlds Than These closes a trilogy that began in 1984 and survived the loss of one of its creators. For readers who know Jack Sawyer’s earlier adventures, it offers a final return to the Territories. For newcomers, the best route is to begin with The Talisman, continue with Black House, and then approach the new novel.
