Modern Warfare 4 beta will include campaign gameplay
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is due for release in October, and its upcoming beta tests will offer more than the series’ usual multiplayer preview. Both playtests will include the single-player campaign mission “Entrenched”.
The second test will also add Warzone, including the Resurgence Zodiac map. That combination makes this the first Call of Duty beta to feature campaign content, standard multiplayer and Warzone in the same testing programme.
Modern Warfare 4 beta dates and platforms
The Call of Duty Next event takes place on 21 August, with gameplay streams and beta-code giveaways planned for the day.
Early access runs from 21 to 25 August and is available to players who pre-order Modern Warfare 4. This opening period includes the “Entrenched” campaign mission, six multiplayer maps and nine multiplayer modes.
The early access beta will be playable on PlayStation 5, Windows PC through Steam and Battle.net, and Xbox Series X.
Open beta adds Warzone and Ground War
The second weekend is an open beta, running from 28 August to 1 September. It expands the test with Warzone and the 32-versus-32 Ground War mode, alongside other features.

Pressure is building around the new release
Microsoft appears to be placing significant promotional weight behind Modern Warfare 4. The move follows a subdued response to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which faced harsh reviews and recorded the franchise’s poorest United States sales ranking since 2008.
By comparison, Battlefield 6 was reported to have sold 30 million units, giving that rival series a notable commercial advantage.
The latest Call of Duty was announced earlier in the year. Its story follows a conflict between North and South Korea, while the developers have also said they want to address complaints about the movement system in Modern Warfare 3.
A significant test for Microsoft’s gaming division
The stakes are heightened by difficulties within Microsoft’s gaming division, which is in the process of laying off more than 3,000 employees. The performance of Modern Warfare 4 may therefore matter well beyond the beta itself.
