Hogwarts Legacy 2 is officially in development, with Warner Bros. Discovery confirming the sequel in a letter to shareholders dated 6 August 2026.
The announcement follows the remarkable performance of Hogwarts Legacy, the Harry Potter prequel released in 2023. It became the biggest new release of 2022, sold more than 22 million copies in its first year in the United States, and outperformed that year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The game has since surpassed 40 million copies sold.

Warner Bros. confirms the sequel
Warner Bros. Discovery described games as an “important growth lever” in its shareholder update, while highlighting recent releases including Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire.
The company also outlined a refocused approach built around four key franchises, with more concentrated investment in fewer high-confidence projects. Its pipeline, the letter said, includes the second instalment of Hogwarts Legacy.

“We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second instalment of Hogwarts Legacy.”
The confirmation is not entirely unexpected. In 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels identified a successor to Hogwarts Legacy as one of the company’s biggest priorities for the years ahead.

Harry Potter is central to the games strategy
After describing 2024 as a disappointing year for its games division, Warner Bros. Discovery said in 2025 that it would concentrate on four major properties: Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC projects.
The DC focus was described as primarily Batman for single-character games, while leaving room for selected opportunities connected to the developing DCU. The strategy reflects the company’s attempt to support fewer, larger franchises after several commercial disappointments, cancellations and underperforming releases.

What the HBO series could mean for Hogwarts Legacy 2
There may be a closer connection between the sequel and the upcoming Harry Potter television series. In 2024, then-president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment David Haddad said the games team was coordinating some broad storytelling elements in the sequel with storylines planned for the HBO series.
That does not confirm a shared plot or reveal how the two projects will intersect. It does show that the company has been considering the relationship between its next major Harry Potter game and the television adaptation.

Release timing remains unconfirmed
Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed development, but it has not announced platforms, gameplay details, a release date or a first trailer for Hogwarts Legacy 2.
The original game is approaching its four-year anniversary, and major industry events include Gamescom Opening Night Live in August and The Game Awards in December. A first look could appear at one of those events, although any potential 2027 or 2028 launch remains speculation rather than an announced schedule.
