A24’s live-action Elden Ring film has reached a major production milestone, with filming reportedly close to completion after nearly four months. The wait will continue well beyond the shoot, however, with the film scheduled to reach Australian cinemas and other theatres on 3 March 2028.
Behind-the-scenes update from the prop department
Sean Schofield, a prop maker whose previous credits include The Witcher and The Rings of Power, shared an update on Instagram. His post included a photograph of what appears to be a wrap gift and a thank-you message for the cast and crew. The note was signed by director Alex Garland and producers Allon Reich, Matthew Penry-Davey, Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald and Charlie Reed.
“Dream job to end all dream jobs,” Schofield wrote, describing six solid months of “blood, sweat and tears” spent making what he called the coolest work ever alongside an exceptional team. He added that he could not share anything else for a long time, but felt extremely proud of the result.

Schofield has not revealed his own Elden Ring work, although photographs from filming have offered fans glimpses of the production. Images taken at locations and on sets have shown performers associated with Queen Marika, the Dung Eater and Sorcerer Rogier. Other pictures have identified sets representing Stormveil Castle and Liurnia of the Lakes.
Post-production will be a long process
With principal photography reportedly nearing its conclusion, the project is moving into post-production. The lengthy gap before the 2028 release points to substantial visual-effects work still ahead, particularly for a fantasy world built around FromSoftware’s distinctive environments and creatures.
A24 and Bandai Namco first announced the adaptation in May 2025. Garland, who wrote and directed Ex Machina, Annihilation and Civil War, is directing the film. He is also a committed fan of the game, saying he has completed Elden Ring around seven times and has comparable experience with FromSoftware’s Dark Souls.
Garland reportedly prepared a 160-page screenplay on spec, along with 40 pages of “additional imagery”, to persuade FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki to approve the adaptation. His previous writing credits include adaptations of Never Let Me Go, Annihilation and Dredd, giving him considerable experience reshaping existing material for the screen.
