Roblox horror-survival game 99 Nights in the Forest is being adapted for film, with Academy Award winner Josh Cooley attached to write the screenplay and Sam Raimi joining as a producer.
Specific story details remain limited, but the project arrives during a wider surge of video-game adaptations. The Super Mario Bros. films each earned more than $1 billion, while A Minecraft Movie (2025) has already secured a sequel. Hollywood is also developing films based on properties ranging from The Legend of Zelda to popular Roblox experiences.
Josh Cooley will write the Roblox movie
Josh Cooley has been hired to write 99 Nights in the Forest. His directing credits include Toy Story 4 (2019) and Transformers One (2024), while he also wrote the screenplay for Inside Out (2015).
Cooley won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Toy Story 4. His work on Inside Out was also recognised with an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
The screenplay news was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Sam Raimi joins as producer
Sam Raimi is attached as a producer. He is best known for directing the Evil Dead films and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy.
Raimi’s involvement gives the adaptation a filmmaker with extensive experience in horror and superhero cinema, although the available announcement does not reveal further production details, casting or a release date.
99 Nights in the Forest is not the only Roblox title moving towards the big screen. Films based on Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot are also in development.
