The latest Street Fighter film leaves the door open for a sequel, but a confirmed follow-up is not yet in place. The mid-credits scene points towards more, while the only current confirmation is that a second film is being written.
Olivier Richters, who plays Zangief, has now offered fans a potentially significant update. In the comments beneath a YouTube video discussing whether the film “ruined” Zangief, Richters said that the cast had signed on for three movies.

“Zangief here. When they asked me to play Zangief it was all very clear. There was one goal: show a glimpse of Zangief and his power, so we all want more. All actors, including me, signed for 3 movies. If a sequel is made, Zangief will shine was the promise. Apart from that, you can’t expect from a two-hour movie with so many characters for everyone to shine in the first part. But anyways, thanks for wanting to see more of Zangief :)!”
What the three-film deal actually means
Richters’ comment suggests that Zangief and the other principal fighters could return for two further instalments. However, signing actors for multiple films does not guarantee that those films will enter production. A sequel still needs the necessary approvals, financing and scheduling.
For now, the only confirmation that it’s currently being written is that a follow-up script is in progress. There is no confirmed release date or production announcement for a second movie.
Could Zangief have a larger role?
Richters also pushed back gently against the idea that the film damaged the character. His explanation is that the first movie had to introduce a large ensemble, leaving limited room for many fighters beyond Ryu and Ken.
That approach could give a sequel more space to develop the wider roster. Zangief’s first appearance may have been designed to establish his presence and power before giving him a more substantial storyline in a later chapter.
That possibility will interest fans who follow the latest arcade and gaming news, particularly those who first encountered these characters in the original fighting game.
From fighting-game cabinet to film series
The news also highlights how much room the Street Fighter universe has to expand. Its large cast could support separate rivalries, tournaments and character-focused stories, provided future films give those elements enough time.
For anyone bringing that arcade experience home, RETROCADE’s arcade machines offer a dedicated way to revisit classic fighting games. Smaller rooms can also suit a compact bartop arcade, while replacement controls and other arcade parts can help maintain an older cabinet.
Until a sequel is formally approved, Richters’ comments remain an encouraging sign rather than a guarantee. For now, Zangief fans have the promise that, if the next film happens, the Red Cyclone should have considerably more opportunity to shine.
