SNIKT! Wolverine is facing a dangerous challenge in Marvel Comics: four unstable mutants have been transformed into brutal copies of the iconic X-Men character.
Logan remains one of Marvel’s most prominent mutants, with a history stretching back decades and a major role in the X-Men franchise. Now, a new storyline is introducing opponents designed to copy his most recognisable weapon: his claws.
The development is revealed in Marvel’s solicitation material for Uncanny X-Men #38, which begins a new story by writer Gail Simone and artist Juan Frigeri.
Four Wolverine copies are coming to Uncanny X-Men
The four mutants were created during experiments in laboratories beneath the former Graymalkin Prison. Their abilities were already difficult to control, but the experiments have made them even more dangerous.
Marvel has not yet disclosed the group’s exact identities or confirmed whether they are familiar characters to readers following Uncanny X-Men. What is known is that the four are pursuing a new ally of the X-Men, bringing them into direct conflict with Logan.
The story presents four damaged mutants as cheap, brutal Wolverine knockoffs. Their powers were already out of control, and now they have claws while hunting a new ally of the Uncanny X-Men.
The conflict continues in Uncanny X-Men #39. In that issue, the newcomers plan to follow Wolverine’s path, but only after making sure the original is permanently out of their way.
A fitting threat for Logan
The premise has a clear connection to Wolverine’s long history as a mentor. Over the years, Logan has guided younger mutants including Kitty Pryde and Jubilee, making a group of violent imitators an especially personal danger.
This does not mean Wolverine is leaving Marvel Comics. Logan continues to appear in his own ongoing adventures and remains one of the most frequently used characters in the X-Men corner of the universe.
