Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine is designed to make combat feel brutal without leaving Logan in shredded clothing for most of the adventure. The explanation for his self-repairing suit is remarkably straightforward: keeping him nearly naked throughout the game would not be practical.

An extended gameplay presentation shown during Sony’s June State of Play gave players a closer look at the PS5-exclusive title. Wolverine’s claws tear through enemies, while gunfire, explosives and repeated attacks visibly damage his outfit. Yet, much like Logan’s body, the clothing eventually returns to normal.

A practical solution to persistent damage

Preview coverage published on August 13 revealed more about the game ahead of its September release. IGN asked Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald and senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed why the suit restores itself.

“I think mostly there’s some practicalities to it,” Fitzgerald explained.

Fitzgerald said the team needed to balance clothing that reflects the violence of each encounter with the cinematic image of Wolverine. Leaving him in shredded rags for most of the game would not deliver the right experience, so the suit repairs itself at suitable moments.

Reiner-Reed added that early testing showed the problem clearly: players could spend too long moving through missions with damaged clothing, which made Wolverine feel less powerful. The developers therefore settled on a compromise between visible combat damage and a restored appearance.

You can see a good example of that in action here.

Damage remains detailed, even when it is temporary

The decision does not mean Insomniac has ignored the visual consequences of combat. Fitzgerald said the studio invested heavily in showing damage on Wolverine, enemies and their clothing. The rips and battered costumes simply will not remain permanently.

The game’s blood effects also use fluid technology rather than only pre-rendered visual effects. Blood particles can come from enemies, strike the ground and create individual splatter marks on Logan. If Wolverine walks through water, the blood washes away and produces swirling patterns.

That approach should appeal to players who enjoy detailed visual feedback in action games, much as arcade enthusiasts appreciate responsive presentation and clearly readable effects. RETROCADE’s arcade news and features cover more of that wider gaming culture, while arcade videos offer another way to explore games in motion.

Permanent clothing damage might sound appealing, but a character who is shot, stabbed and caught in explosions repeatedly would quickly be left wearing little more than scraps. Insomniac’s choice keeps the combat damage meaningful without turning every later mission into a wardrobe problem.

For players comparing different ways to enjoy action games at home, RETROCADE’s arcade machines provide another option for a dedicated gaming setup.
