“Whence the Weeping” is an early side quest in Phantom Blade Zero, but its conclusion is locked behind later story progress. The initial instruction — find the source of the weeping — is deliberately broad, and following the sound itself will not advance the mission.
The quest unfolds across several regions. Watch for its map icons, speak with characters whenever dialogue about the weeping becomes available, and do not worry if the objective appears to stall. The final stage takes place in the Mountain of Imprisonment, after its area boss has been defeated.

Start the quest with Yu’er
The quest begins after Soul wakes following the carriage sequence in Weeping Creek Valley. During the main quest Against the Flow, you meet Yu’er, who is searching for a Flesh Lily to save her father.
Choose the dialogue option “Ask about the Woman’s Weeping”. This is the only progress available at this point, so continue through Weeping Creek Valley and move on to the next region rather than searching for the sound.
Defeat the Crimson Forest boss
After completing Weeping Creek Valley, a quest marker appears at the end of the Crimson Forest map. There is no separate puzzle here: defeat the area’s final boss to clear this stage.
Question Jewel in the Village of Lu
Early in the Village of Lu, find Jewel, one of the Forge’s sisters. Ask her “about the faint weeping”. She suggests that the sound may come from Chord, Inanis’s daughter, who could be calling for help.
The objective then changes to “Could the Chord be in the northern mountains?” This conversation unlocks the next part of the journey.
Open the route to Meigu Lake
The northern mountains are reached through Meigu Lake, but the route through Pangzhen is initially blocked. Progress the main story until you defeat the Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster.
This victory awards the story item Dormant Flaming Mane. Take it to Jingyang Hall in Pangzhen and ask Lei Dang to repair it. The result is the Flaming Mane phantom edge.
Next, visit the Pavilion of Knowledge Crossroads bell and travel east. Use the Flaming Mane on the roots blocking the path, then continue until you reach the docks and enter Meigu Lake.
Reach the Mountain of Imprisonment
Before taking the boat, complete the “Illusory Pipa” side quest. The destination is the Weeping Mistgate on the north-eastern side of Meigu Lake. Mist blocks the gate, and the Illusory Pipa is required to clear it.
Once inside the Mountain of Imprisonment, finish the area by defeating Huangxing, the Kunlun Renegade. The boss rewards you with the Flying Guillotine phantom edge.
Use the Flying Guillotine on the mechanism in the boss room. This opens the floor and lets you descend to the bottom, where the source of the weeping is finally revealed and the side quest is completed. You will also receive Inani’s Radiant Fan phantom edge.
