Under the Skin is free to stream: why this strange sci-fi film still lingers

Viral clips can give films a second life, but they can also reduce complex stories to a single image or joke. Scarlett Johansson’s Under the Skin is a particularly striking example: often discussed for its provocative moments, yet far more disturbing and ambitious as a complete film.

The 2013 science-fiction thriller was directed by Jonathan Glazer and became known as one of the creepiest films of its year. It has also appeared on several best-film lists, while Johansson’s performance attracted significant awards attention. For Australian viewers, the film is currently available to watch free on several ad-supported services.

Under the Skin is listed in the Under the Skin film database, but its unusual approach is best understood by watching the entire 108-minute experience rather than isolated clips.

What is Under the Skin about?

Johansson plays an unnamed woman travelling through a Scottish city. She searches for men who appear lonely or vulnerable, draws them into secluded locations and causes them to vanish. The film offers little conventional explanation for her behaviour, leaving viewers to assemble its meaning from atmosphere, action and image.

The story is loosely adapted from Michel Faber’s 2000 novel. In the book, the woman is named Isserley and works as bait in an extraterrestrial operation that abducts humans to become an expensive food source for aliens. The film removes that direct explanation and deliberately leaves its protagonist nameless.

That change turns the movie into something much less literal. On one level, it resembles an arthouse take on a predatory alien thriller. On another, it follows an extraterrestrial learning what it means to inhabit a human body and navigate human society. The film can also be read as a meditation on sex, identity, celebrity and the way people look at one another.

A deliberately alien viewing experience

The movie’s style is as important as its plot. Almost 14 minutes pass before anyone speaks aloud, while music frequently carries the emotional weight that dialogue would normally provide. Several scenes were captured with hidden cameras and unusual perspectives, and many performers apart from Johansson were amateurs or newcomers.

The result feels less like a conventional thriller and more like an observational experiment conducted from outside humanity. Johansson’s character studies small details, including ants, strangers and her own body, with an unsettling curiosity. Even while she leads men towards danger, she rarely seems motivated by anger or personal revenge.

That distance can make the film feel uncomfortable from its opening minutes. Its long static shots and sparse storytelling may test viewers expecting a conventional science-fiction adventure. Those who stay with it, however, are rewarded with images and ideas that are difficult to dismiss after the credits.

Johansson’s unusual sci-fi trilogy

Under the Skin also fits into an informal trilogy of Johansson performances about image, commodification and power. She had been acting since the age of 10 and was already a household name after her breakout role in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. The film arrived soon after her major appearance in The Avengers.

In 2013’s Her, she voices Samantha, an artificial intelligence operating system whose existence is treated as a product. In 2014’s Lucy, her character begins as someone abused and overlooked before becoming the most powerful person on Earth. Under the Skin completes the pattern by presenting Johansson as a concealed danger wrapped in the recognisable image of a famous star.

Together, the three films examine what happens when a performer’s public identity becomes part of the story. Under the Skin is the most oblique of the group, but its warning is clear: attractive surfaces can hide something far more complicated underneath.

If you have only encountered the film through a short online clip, the full movie provides the context those fragments leave out. It is unsettling, spare and deliberately difficult—but that is precisely why it remains so memorable.
