Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment are marking the 40th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie with a new cinema release and an emotional final appearance from Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
Cullen, the defining voice of the Autobot leader, died in late August at the age of 80. His last original performance as Prime will be heard in a new animated short screened alongside selected showings of the anniversary release.

Optimus Prime: Awakening announced for anniversary screenings
Optimus Prime: Awakening is a fully realised 12-minute animated short described by its producers as a tribute to the Transformers community and the late Cullen. It will accompany select 4K screenings of The Transformers: The Movie from 17 to 22 September.
The short is expected to combine emotional storytelling with high-energy action. Frank Welker returns to voice Megatron and Soundwave, appearing opposite Cullen’s final newly recorded performance as Optimus Prime.
“Optimus Prime and Megatron were made for each other,” Welker said. He described Cullen’s interpretation of Prime as being shaped by honesty, loyalty and a commitment to doing what is right, adding that returning as Megatron and Soundwave for one final story with Cullen was a gift. Welker also said he would miss his friend, while Cullen’s voice, heart and values would remain part of Optimus Prime.
A final homecoming for Peter Cullen
Hasbro and Fathom Entertainment said Cullen’s return held deep personal meaning for him. The companies reported that he referred to the project as a “homecoming” to a character he had embodied for more than four decades.
The animation and visual work comes from The Third Floor, a studio known for projects including Predator: Killer of Killers.
The anniversary rerelease is being promoted as an “Apology Tour”, acknowledging the lasting reaction to the original film’s decision to kill off Optimus Prime. Tickets are on sale at Fathom’s website.
