After almost 10 years outside Diver City Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba, Tokyo’s life-sized Unicorn Gundam has ended its public operation. Thousands of fans visited to see the landmark one final time before its expected removal.
Odaiba’s second life-sized Gundam
The 19.7-metre Unicorn Gundam was the second full-scale Gundam statue installed outside the shopping centre. It replaced the RX-78 Gundam recreation based on the original television series and made its debut in 2017, shortly after the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn OVA series concluded.
The statue stood beside one of the franchise’s largest Gundam Base stores, where visitors could browse Gunpla and other Gundam merchandise. It was more than a static monument: evening presentations regularly included lighting effects, movement of the visor and other programmed events.

Fans gather for the final performances
Over the years, the statue became an Odaiba landmark even for people who were not dedicated Gundam fans. Its farewell included a major musical event on August 29 featuring Hiroyuki Sawano, composer of the Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn soundtrack, alongside vocalist SennaRin. She recently performed an insert song for Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe.
More visitors returned on August 31 for the final light shows and the official end of operations. Fans were recording its final moments, taking photos and sharing emotional messages as the countdown approached.
At 10pm Japan Standard Time, people in the crowd could be heard thanking the statue for its years of service. Many stayed behind after the conclusion, reluctant to leave while it remained their last chance to see the Unicorn Gundam in its familiar setting.
A final message before shutdown
One account of the closing moments describes the statue making its familiar Unicorn sounds, with references to Riddhe, before a message from Banagher was heard. After Banagher said “otsukaresama”, meaning “thank you for your hard work”, the statue stopped functioning. Its psycho-frame no longer illuminated, and the surrounding lights no longer lit the structure.
The final sequence ended with the Unicorn Gundam falling dark after Banagher’s farewell message, marking the end of its public operation.
Fans also documented the atmosphere using the life-sized Unicorn Gundam hashtag. Despite the shutdown, the physical structure had not yet been dismantled as of the morning of September 1; demolition had not begun at that point.
What could replace the statue?
Bandai Namco has not confirmed what, if anything, will take the Unicorn Gundam’s place. Fans have speculated about newer mobile suits, including the XVX-016 Gundam Aerial from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, but no replacement has been announced.
For visitors accustomed to seeing the statue on every trip to Odaiba, its disappearance will leave a noticeable gap. A future full-scale Gundam may eventually occupy the plaza, but its identity and the timetable for any replacement remain unknown.
