Street Fighter has delivered the biggest theatrical opening in the franchise’s history, giving Capcom’s long-running fighting-game series a significant cinema win despite a mixed critical response.

A record opening for Street Fighter

The new live-action Street Fighter film opened in cinemas on 16 October 2026. Its first weekend produced US$31 million domestically, putting it comfortably ahead of the weekend’s other major debuts: Nathan Fielder’s documentary You Can See Everything, which earned US$15 million, and Whalefall, which took US$8 million.

That result also puts the latest film well ahead of the franchise’s earlier live-action adaptations. The 1994 film, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, opened to US$6.8 million in the United States and finished with a domestic total of US$33 million. Its worldwide theatrical gross reached US$99 million.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, released in 2010 with Kristin Kreuk in the title role, opened to US$4.7 million domestically and earned US$12.7 million worldwide. The 2026 film’s opening weekend surpassed the combined openings of both earlier adaptations.

Audience response is stronger this time

The live-action films have not been consistent critical successes, but the latest entry is performing better with audiences. After its opening weekend, Street Fighter (2026) held a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with 20% for the 1994 Street Fighter and 18% for The Legend of Chun-Li.

The result is encouraging, although the film still has substantial ground to cover against its reported US$82 million production budget. It is also being compared with Mortal Kombat 2, which opened earlier in the year to US$38.5 million domestically and eventually reached US$129 million worldwide. That film was considered an underperformer against its US$80 million budget.

A possible sequel is teased at the end of the new film, but there is no confirmation that Street Fighter 2 will proceed.

Who stars in the new film?

Why the result matters to arcade fans

Street Fighter has remained one of gaming’s most durable fighting franchises for almost four decades. The series spans six mainline entries, along with numerous spin-offs and re-releases, and its characters continue to connect games, film and competitive play.

For Australian players revisiting the series at home, a dedicated fighting-game setup can make a difference. Our arcade machines collection covers full-size cabinets, while bartop arcades offer a more compact option. If you are planning a custom build, the arcade parts range can help with essentials such as joysticks and buttons.

The film’s opening does not settle the debate over its quality, but it does establish a clear commercial milestone: no previous live-action Street Fighter movie has opened as strongly.
