Stargate Atlantis is available to watch free on YouTube, giving Australian science-fiction fans an easy way to revisit a five-season adventure featuring Jason Momoa before his breakthrough as a major film star.
The series began with the wider Stargate universe. Roland Emmerich’s 1994 film was intended to launch a trilogy, but those plans did not eventuate. The concept continued through Stargate SG-1, created by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, which ran for 10 successful seasons on the Sci-Fi Channel, now known as Syfy.
SG-1 followed an interstellar team using Stargates—portals capable of connecting distant parts of the galaxy. What is Stargate Atlantis about?
The story begins when an expedition travels to the Pegasus Galaxy and reaches Atlantis. The team is led by Major John Sheppard, played by Joe Flanigan, who assembles a group capable of studying the city while responding to the dangers around it.

As the story develops, the team gains Ronon Dex, played by Jason Momoa. Sheppard and his colleagues rescue Ronon from the Wraith, and he becomes an important member of the expedition.
Why the series stands apart from SG-1
Stargate Atlantis inherited a popular science-fiction setting, but it developed its own identity across five seasons. Like SG-1, it combines exploration, action and continuing storylines. However, the spin-off places greater emphasis on isolation and survival.
The original team had comparatively straightforward access to Earth and Stargate Command. The Atlantis expedition does not. Its members are stranded in another galaxy, cut off from familiar institutions and resources. That premise gives even routine missions greater urgency.
The show also uses its science-fiction ideas to explore difficult ethical questions. One example is a retrovirus that may transform a Wraith into a human. Although the treatment offers a possible way to neutralise an enemy, it also raises troubling questions about identity, culture and whether changing an entire species can ever be morally justified.
A survival story built around its characters
Across its five seasons, the series examines how powerful civilisations can collapse despite their technological advantages. The Atlantis crew faces a similar danger whenever confidence becomes recklessness or scientific progress outruns responsibility.
Those larger ideas work because the show gives its characters room to change. Sheppard and McKay frequently clash, while the wider team must manage disagreements between capable people with competing priorities. Their conflicts create tension, but the series also makes room for humour and genuine warmth.
The Wraith remain a particularly effective source of pressure. Their need to harvest human life turns survival into an ongoing negotiation, forcing the expedition to weigh immediate safety against the consequences of its alliances and experiments.
Stargate Atlantis was cancelled after five seasons in 2009. Even so, its finale provides a more natural conclusion than an abrupt interruption, giving the expedition’s story a satisfying sense of direction.
