Dungeons & Dragons will move beyond traditional fantasy in 2027, with Star Wars confirmed as the next major crossover for the tabletop role-playing game. The announcement came at the end of the D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con 2026.

Star Wars joins D&D’s Universes Beyond plan

The reveal follows the announcement that World of Warcraft will become the first crossover under D&D’s new Universes Beyond strategy. That move already raised questions about which other established properties could enter the fantasy RPG, and Star Wars now appears to be the biggest name confirmed for the programme.

The presentation ended with Darth Vader appearing on stage to reveal that the 2027 Season of Rebellion will be a Star Wars crossover. No details were provided about the format, rules content or specific era of the setting.

D&D has explored science fiction before

Although Star Wars represents a major change of genre, D&D has previously experimented with science fiction and science fantasy. Gary Gygax’s 1980 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks adventure for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons sent players into a crashed spaceship populated by robots, aliens and laser weapons.

The Spelljammer setting, first published in 1989, made space travel and cosmic adventures a more established part of D&D’s wider canon. Wizards of the Coast has also released a Star Wars Roleplaying Game; that early-2000s licence ended in 2010.

How could the Force work in D&D?

There is currently no information about the contents of the Star Wars crossover. The preview of the World of Warcraft book suggests that players and Dungeon Masters could receive the material needed to create campaigns within the crossover universe, but the same approach has not been confirmed for Star Wars.

One of the most interesting design questions will be how the Force is represented in the current D&D rules. The adaptation could potentially draw on psionics, which are scheduled to return with the Dark Sun campaign setting, although that connection remains speculation rather than an announced feature.

Could Star Wars also come to Magic: The Gathering?

The news has also revived speculation about a Star Wars release for Magic: The Gathering. Both games are published by Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro, and D&D is now adopting the crossover-focused approach that has been commercially successful for the trading card game.

That does not confirm a Star Wars set for Magic. Star Wars currently has its own trading card game, Star Wars Unlimited, so any agreement with Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast may apply only to D&D products.

There has been at least one intriguing hint for Magic players. A few months before the Gen Con announcement, players reported finding misprinted cards carrying an X-Wing set symbol. The error does not establish that a Star Wars set is planned, but it leaves room for continued speculation about a future Commander clash between the galaxy far, far away and other major science-fiction universes.
