I wanted to take a minute to address and explain the value behind the drives we create here at Retrocade, especially with some of the recent pushback around pricing and what we offer.
We’ve put years into building what we supply to the virtual pinball community — this isn’t something that came together quickly. Every single month we’re putting in dozens of hours keeping everything updated, making adjustments, fixing issues, and improving performance across the board. And that’s before you even get into the constant headaches that come with working on a platform like VPX, which has been around for over two decades.
This isn’t like MAME where you can just pick it up and go. Virtual pinball takes years to properly understand and dial in, and even now we’re still learning new things and solving new problems all the time.
When you buy from one of the top drive creators in the hobby — including us — you’re getting a product that’s been heavily tested, refined, and built to deliver the best possible experience. Everything we provide has been properly stress-tested and optimised, not just thrown together.
Are there cheaper drives out there? Yes. But they are not even close to what we’ve built. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.
On top of that, costs have increased significantly. With the recent surge in AI demand and storage requirements, SSD prices have gone through the roof — we’re now paying around $250 for a 2TB SSD alone. That’s just the hardware. It doesn’t include the time we spend installing, configuring, and setting everything up on your cabinet, or the ongoing support we provide after the sale.
And that support is a big part of the value. We don’t just hand over a drive and disappear — we’re here to help, troubleshoot, and keep things running properly.
