Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons, is directing the next Resident Evil movie. The new film takes Capcom’s survival-horror world in a different direction, with an ordinary courier caught in a modern-day outbreak rather than a familiar game hero.

Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier travelling to Raccoon City to deliver an organ. The city is best known to players as the setting for the outbreak in Resident Evil 2.
During the journey, Bryan argues with his girlfriend over the phone before accidentally hitting a woman on a snowy road. The circumstances are immediately unsettling: although she walked into the road, she appears to have already been dead.
While looking for help and a working phone, Bryan reaches what seems to be an abandoned house. That is where he encounters the undead. It remains unclear how much of the film will unfold inside the house or what other locations and threats will appear later.

Are Leon, Chris or other game characters appearing?

Snow is another deliberate change. Raccoon City was not shown under those conditions in the game, but Cregger chose the wintry setting as an aesthetic decision. Does it happen alongside Resident Evil 2?
Yes. Cregger has previously described the film as taking place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2. His concept is that the action unfolding around the police station could still be happening elsewhere in the same world, with Bryan pursuing a separate mission on the other side of Raccoon City.
That means the movie can share the outbreak’s broader setting and atmosphere without following Leon, Claire or the exact plot of the game.
What makes it feel like Resident Evil?
Bryan is designed as an inexperienced survivor rather than an elite action hero. He is not expected to perform acrobatics, deliver one-liners or confidently eliminate waves of enemies. The intended experience is closer to dropping an ordinary person into a Resident Evil game and watching him improvise under pressure.
Trailers have shown Bryan searching for ammunition and supplies, including game-like item boxes. His lack of firearms expertise means that every encounter is more dangerous, and useful equipment becomes essential.
This survival-focused perspective has similarities with the more vulnerable protagonists seen across the series, including Grace’s sections in Resident Evil Requiem. Cregger has also used camera movement inspired by third-person games. When Abrams looks in a direction, the camera operator moves with him, creating the impression that Bryan is controlling the viewpoint.
