Post Malone Plays His $2M One Ring Card

Post Malone has done something almost unthinkable with one of the world’s most valuable trading cards: he removed his $2 million The One Ring from its protective case and played it in a genuine game of Magic: The Gathering.

The musician brought the card to an episode of Game Knights, the Commander-focused show from The Command Zone. Rather than treating the card as a display piece, Malone used it during the match.

“I’m taking it out of the obnoxious big block,” Malone said as the other players reacted. “It would ruin game night.”

That decision is unusual in the world of high-value collectibles. Rare cards are commonly graded, sealed and carefully stored to protect their condition. Malone instead put his unique copy into play as it was designed to be used.

The card’s extraordinary value

Malone’s card is the one-of-one, serialised 001/001 version of The One Ring from the 2023 The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set. Wizards of the Coast produced only one copy to represent the singular Ring at the heart of J.R.R. Tolkien’s story.

Its in-game abilities are the same as those found on more widely available versions. When it enters the battlefield, it gives its controller protection from everything until their next turn. It can then be tapped to draw cards, although doing so adds burden counters that eventually cause life loss.

From discovery to a $2 million sale

The card was discovered by Canadian collector Brook Trafton. PSA authenticated it and awarded it a Mint 9 grade before Malone purchased it directly from Trafton for $2 million in August 2023.

Trafton said that Malone was the first person he thought of when he found the card. Although keeping it would have been an amazing prospect for a lifelong Magic player, Trafton described the sale as life-changing and hoped the card would go to someone who appreciated it.

The One Ring returns to Middle-earth

Since Malone bought the card, Magic: The Gathering has revisited Tolkien’s world. A new The Hobbit set launched on August 14, focusing on Bilbo Baggins’ journey to the Lonely Mountain and featuring characters such as Gandalf, Thorin and Smaug.

The set includes another version of The One Ring, but it does not change the status of Malone’s 001/001 card from Tales of Middle-earth. That copy remains the only one of its kind.

For collectors, the episode creates an unusual contrast between preservation and participation. A card valued at $2 million was not simply displayed behind glass; it was shuffled into a Commander deck and used at the table.
