Pokémon BugLime Gives the Bug Type a Fresh Start

4

Bug-type Pokémon have had to work harder than most to win over trainers. Although favourites such as Butterfree and Heracross have their fans, insect-inspired monsters are often associated with real-world fears, while the type’s long list of weaknesses has made it one of the series’ least popular categories.

Pokémon BugLime takes that reputation head-on. This fan-made game is built on Pokémon FireRed and reshapes the adventure around bug types, including insect starters and a roster designed to make the entire category more useful and appealing.

A full adventure built around bug Pokémon

The hack includes 94 bug-type Pokémon drawn from across the series, along with several creatures that have been reclassified as bugs. Returning Pokémon receive extensive adjustments, including new type combinations, revised stats, different movesets and altered evolution methods.

Rather than simply filling the game with insects, BugLime changes the wider adventure to match its theme. Every non-player character and Gym Leader uses bug Pokémon. Dual typings allow Gym Leaders to retain connections to their former elemental specialities while still fitting the new focus.

BugLime uses an older Pokémon game as its foundation but adds mechanics from later generations, including the Shiny Charm. It also introduces several quality-of-life changes that reduce the friction of a traditional playthrough.

  • TMs can be used without being consumed.
  • HMs can be deleted.
  • The Experience Share becomes available midway through the adventure instead of near the end.

The three starter choices are Tarountula, Surskit and Sizzlipede, giving players an appropriately themed team from the opening moments.

“The objective is to make all Bug-Types fun to use, not necessarily ‘realistic’ changes,” creator spearmintz wrote in a Pokémon forum.

That design goal explains the project’s approach: BugLime is less interested in simulating a perfectly natural ecosystem than in making a historically overlooked type enjoyable to play. Players can explore Pokémon BugLime here, although anyone who finds the bug-heavy format overwhelming can still rely on Repel.

For readers who enjoy collecting and customising classic games, the project also sits comfortably alongside RETROCADE’s wider arcade and gaming news. Those considering a dedicated setup can browse arcade machines, while hands-on builders may prefer DIY arcade kits.
