A decade after its last distribution, the rare Poké Ball Pattern Vivillon is returning through Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Players had to complete a community challenge to unlock it, and that target has now been reached.

Why this Vivillon is so unusual

Vivillon has 20 wing patterns, with the pattern normally determined by the player’s real-world location when it is caught. Completing the collection was once a major challenge, while The Pokémon Company has also recreated every pattern as part of its Sitting Cuties plush range.

The Poké Ball Pattern is among the most recognisable variants. It first appeared as a limited distribution for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y in 2014, beginning at a temporary Pokémon Center pop-up in Paris. Later distributions reached Japan and Germany, as well as players through Nintendo Network. In 2016, it was distributed again to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire players at the Hiroshima Pokémon Center in Japan.

How the Legends: Z-A challenge worked

The pattern had not been available since those events, but Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduced another route. Game Freak placed a special Spewpa in the game’s Mystery Gift feature. Evolving that Pokémon, along with other Spewpa found in Wild Areas, awarded “Vivillon Points”.

The community needed to reach 660,000 points for every player to receive a Poké Ball Pattern Vivillon. The Mystery Gift Spewpa could evolve into any of 16 available patterns with equal odds. It could not produce the Poké Ball Pattern or the three patterns normally found in Legends: Z-A, meaning the reward challenge also offered a way to obtain a Vivillon variant not yet caught in the game.

Players could access the event through Spewpa to the game’s Mystery Gift feature.

The goal has been reached

There was no in-game counter showing how many points an individual player had contributed, leaving some uncertainty about whether the total represented evolved Spewpa or another measure. Overall progress was tracked on this official website.

Update, 29 October 2026: The 660,000-point target has been met. Game Freak says it will provide information about when the Poké Ball Pattern Vivillon becomes available at a later date.
