Studio Colorido has become known for warm, imaginative anime that places extraordinary events inside ordinary childhood worlds. Films such as A Whisker Away, Drifting Home and Cosmic Princess Kaguya! all reflect that approach, pairing expressive animation with stories about growing up without abandoning imagination.

The impossible is never an excuse to stop thinking. Instead, every strange event becomes another problem to investigate.
Penguin Highway captures the central idea that science and wonder can strengthen one another. Aoyama’s analytical mind does not make the magic less powerful; it gives him new questions to pursue and leads him deeper into an increasingly fascinating mystery.
Where childhood imagination meets science fiction
Hiroyasu Ishida’s direction is particularly effective because the film does not begin in a distant fantasy kingdom or a secret magical academy. Its remarkable events unfold in suburban streets, small forests, convenience stores and sunlit empty fields. The normality of the surroundings makes every waddling penguin feel even more astonishing.
This fascination with childhood curiosity would later appear in Ishida’s work on Drifting Home, but Penguin Highway presents the idea with unusual confidence. The film suggests that becoming older should not mean surrendering wonder. Maturity can also mean learning more thoughtful ways to examine the world.
That makes it a superb summer anime. The story understands the distinctive rhythm of school holidays: long, bright days, familiar streets transformed by adventure and the feeling that any unexplained sight might lead somewhere extraordinary.
Aoyama watches penguins emerge from discarded soft-drink cans, follows clues towards a mysterious “Sea” beyond reality and races through his neighbourhood in search of answers. Although the mystery eventually becomes cosmic in scale, the film remains grounded in the small discoveries and personal experiences that make childhood adventures feel universal.
Why Penguin Highway deserves more attention
Penguin Highway may not be discussed as often as Studio Colorido’s later releases or the best-known works of Studio Ghibli, but it remains the studio’s defining achievement. It established Colorido’s visual warmth and emotional sincerity while giving Ishida a science-fiction story with a personality all its own.
Viewers who discovered Studio Colorido through its more recent streaming releases will find an important part of the studio’s creative foundation here. Penguin Highway is an imaginative, carefully observed film that turns an everyday neighbourhood into an enchanting universe.
