Ridley Scott’s 158-minute historical epic Napoleon has found fresh momentum on streaming after a disappointing cinema run.
Ridley Scott has built a career around ambitious productions, from the science fiction of Blade Runner and Alien to historical dramas including 2000’s Gladiator and its 2024 follow-up, Gladiator II. His films often favour large-scale worlds, imposing visuals and stories that operate on an epic canvas.
Napoleon, released in 2023, fits that pattern. The film presents the French leader’s rise and fall through sweeping battle scenes, political manoeuvring and his turbulent relationship with Joséphine de Beauharnais. Its theatrical performance, however, did not match the size of its production.
The film earned $61.5 million in the United States and Canada, while international markets contributed a further $160.9 million. That produced a worldwide total of $222.4 million, leaving Napoleon widely viewed as a box-office disappointment despite performing better outside North America.
Napoleon climbs the streaming charts
Streaming has given the film another opportunity to reach viewers. After spending two years on Apple TV Plus, Napoleon has risen to fourth place on the service’s Top Movies chart, suggesting that audiences are still curious about Scott’s interpretation of the emperor.
Joaquin Phoenix leads the cast as Napoleon Bonaparte, portraying a figure shaped by ambition, charisma, ruthlessness and self-belief. Phoenix’s performance is the film’s clearest focal point, giving the emperor a volatile personality that remains compelling even when the wider narrative becomes uneven.
Screenwriter David Scarpa’s research places particular emphasis on Napoleon’s frequently unstable relationship with Joséphine, played by Vanessa Kirby. The production’s treatment of history attracted criticism from French critics and audiences, while the pacing was also questioned. Quieter sections can feel disconnected from the film’s major action sequences.
A longer cut adds more historical context
Even with its substantial theatrical runtime, the film cannot cover every stage of Napoleon’s life. Apple TV Plus also carries an extended 205-minute director’s cut, which expands the material surrounding the French Terror and provides additional background for Joséphine.
That longer version may appeal to viewers who want more context, while the standard cut remains a large-scale war drama built around pageantry, performance and spectacle.
