Miami Vice ’85 has offered its first official glimpse at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as the latest versions of undercover detectives Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett.

The new film returns the franchise to its original 1980s setting, bringing together Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski with screenwriter Dan Gilroy, known for Nightcrawler and Kong: Skull Island. The project was first revealed in April.
What the first look shows
The released image places Jordan and Butler in sharp period suits, signalling a return to the polished style associated with the classic series. Neon-lit locations and the visual identity of 1980s Miami are expected to be central to Kosinski’s approach.
Production is now underway, with the film scheduled for release on 19 May 2028. The supporting cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland and Michael Irby.

The Miami Vice legacy
The original Miami Vice television series ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989. Anthony Yerkovich created the show, while Michael Mann served as executive producer. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas established Crockett and Tubbs, respectively.
Its influence reached video games as well as film and television. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City drew heavily from the show’s crime stories, tropical setting, music-led presentation and vivid Miami-inspired style. Michael Mann later returned to the property with a modernised 2006 film starring Colin Farrell as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs. Miami Vice ’85 takes a different route by moving back to the decade that defined the original series.
Why the reboot may appeal to arcade fans
The combination of fast cars, undercover crime stories, neon colour and unmistakable 1980s design has long suited arcade-style presentation. Readers planning a themed games room can explore arcade machines, or compare space-saving options in the bartop arcade range.
There is no confirmed game adaptation attached to the film. For now, the first look simply establishes the cast, the period setting and the direction of this new screen version of Miami Vice.
