Meta is preparing a new virtual-reality headset designed to make immersive entertainment more approachable. The Meta VR Glasses are scheduled to launch in spring 2027, following the company’s mixed results across virtual and augmented reality.
The announcement arrives as Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta Glasses face public criticism over people recording strangers without consent, while several VR game studios have also closed. Meta is now presenting this headset as its next major step in VR hardware.
A slimmer headset with a separate battery
The Meta VR Glasses have a design that recalls Apple’s Vision Pro, including a separate battery pack connected by a cable. Moving the battery away from the headset allows the main unit to resemble sunglasses more closely. Meta says the headset will weigh 100 grams on the face.
Hardware includes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, 12GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. A microSD card slot will allow users to expand that storage.
VR games and a strong multimedia focus
Meta says around 75 hand-tracked VR games will be playable at launch. The announced software includes a virtual-reality version of Ace Attorney 5. Users will also be able to access Xbox Cloud Gaming with a controller.
Games are only part of the pitch. Meta is positioning the headset primarily as a multimedia device, with support for IMAX-resolution and 3D films through services such as Disney+. Disney+ has promised support from launch. The headset will also offer immersive sports content and applications aimed at activities such as homework.

Higher-resolution displays and more visible cameras
The headset’s cameras are more prominent than those fitted to Meta’s other glasses. That may make discreetly recording people more difficult, but the cameras are primarily intended to support more advanced spatial augmented-reality applications.
Visuals are delivered through 2.4K micro-OLED screens inside the device. Meta describes these displays as among its best-looking screens so far.
Can a lighter design broaden VR’s appeal?
Meta’s main challenge will be reaching people who have not already committed to VR or AR glasses. Apple faced a similar difficulty with its own headset, and a lower-weight design alone may not persuade sceptical buyers.
The Meta VR Glasses are expected to cost $1,299 at launch in spring 2027. Whether that price, a slimmer form factor and access to games, films, sport and practical applications will be enough to bring new users into VR remains an open question.
