Matchbox: The Movie Races to No. 1 on Apple TV
John Cena’s latest action role has taken a familiar childhood toy into spy-thriller territory. Matchbox: The Movie launched on Apple TV on 9 October and quickly reached the top of the service’s US movie chart.
That early streaming success arrives despite a cool critical response. For Australian viewers interested in car culture, toy adaptations and high-speed entertainment, the film is an intriguing example of how nostalgia can drive audiences even when reviews are divided.

Why Matchbox: The Movie is attracting viewers
The film follows Sean, played by Cena, an undercover CIA agent who returns to his hometown and reconnects with old friends. Their reunion soon becomes dangerous when they are drawn into an international conspiracy.
What begins as a personal return turns into a globe-trotting mission to save the world. The story combines spy-movie action with the recognisable appeal of Mattel’s classic Matchbox cars.
According to FlixPatrol’s streaming rankings, the film reached No. 1 on Apple TV’s US movie chart during its opening weekend. That result suggests there remains a strong audience for large-scale films built around familiar toys and brands.

A cast built for action and comedy
Matchbox: The Movie is directed by Sam Hargrave, who also directed Extraction 2. The film leans into fast car chases, international locations and broad spy-adventure spectacle.
Jessica Biel co-stars as Aimee, with Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Arturo Castro and Danai Gurira also appearing. Cena’s previous work has included comedies, superhero projects and family-focused roles, giving him a varied screen career beyond his time in WWE.
For viewers drawn to the automotive side of the premise, the film’s emphasis on driving and pursuit sequences may have particular appeal. It is a cinematic version of the same broad fascination that makes racing simulators and driving games such popular arcade attractions.
Critics have been far less enthusiastic
The film’s chart performance has not been matched by its reviews. Variety criticised the film for resembling a stopgap between Fast & Furious releases and argued that its action leaves little room for emotional storytelling.
The Wrap offered a more forgiving assessment of the ensemble, calling the movie an agreeable way to pass the time while still questioning its toy-commercial feel. The film holds a 25% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Another Mattel property after Barbie
Matchbox: The Movie is another attempt to expand a Mattel property into a major entertainment franchise. It follows the enormous cultural impact of Barbie, although the two films have received notably different critical reactions.
The contrast also highlights the challenge of adapting a toy whose appeal is closely connected to play, collecting and imagination. Matchbox cars are instantly recognisable, but a feature film must build a larger story around that foundation.

Is Matchbox: The Movie worth watching?
The answer will depend on what you want from the film. Viewers looking for carefully developed drama may find the critical response understandable, while fans of car chases, globe-trotting missions and uncomplicated action could enjoy its brisk, nostalgic approach.
Its No. 1 opening position on Apple TV shows that the film has found an audience, even without strong reviews. If the combination of toy cars and spy spectacle sounds appealing, Matchbox: The Movie may be worth adding to your watch list.
