The full card gallery for Magic: The Gathering’s The Hobbit set has now been revealed. Among the mechanics, card combinations and artwork, one detail stands out: this version of Bilbo Baggins is remarkably handsome.
Bilbo has appeared on Magic cards before, including as the older, distinguished gentleman seen in The Lord of the Rings. The new set depicts him during his younger years in The Hobbit, and the artists have given the burglar a polished, unexpectedly dashing look.
The detail that sells the design is the narrow grey streak in Bilbo’s hair. It gives him a touch of sophistication that was not quite present in Martin Freeman’s film portrayal. His first card is blue, however, which may test the patience of players who would rather avoid that colour’s strategies.
Looking across the rest of the set does not make the situation any less striking.
Bilbo’s dwarven companions receive similarly refined artwork. Fíli, Kìli and Bofur, look different from their film counterparts, while Thranduil’s cards once again bear a strong resemblance to actor Lee Pace.
Why The Hobbit suits Magic
Some Magic players are frustrated by the game’s seemingly relentless cadence of releases and the growing number of licensed crossovers. Others feel those collaborations are slowly morphing the game into Fortnite but cards.
The Hobbit appears to avoid much of that criticism. The earlier Lord of the Rings release was well received, and this follow-up seems to capture the same strengths. Tolkien’s Middle-earth has a natural connection with Magic’s sword-and-sorcery foundation, making the setting feel at home on the cards.
For players who enjoy a regular draft night, the set offers a strong reason to gather around the table.
