A leaked 100-card list for Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Secret Lair Commander deck, Odds and Ends, points to an unusual Yennett strategy packed with valuable reprints.
What the leaked deck contains
Odds and Ends uses Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign as its commander. The Esper-coloured 3/5 Sphinx has flying, vigilance and menace. Whenever Yennett attacks, you reveal the top card of your library. If its mana value is odd, you may play it without paying its mana cost; if it is even, you draw it instead.
The deck was first discussed late last year, alongside distinctive artwork by Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo. A reportedly misdelivered unreleased copy has now led to a complete decklist appearing online, including on Reddit and deck-building websites. Based on existing card prices, the reprints are estimated to be worth between $300 and $448 in total.
Yennett rewards odd mana values
Yennett’s wording creates more choices than its headline ability might suggest. Playing an odd-mana-value card from the top of the library is optional. Declining lets you draw it, while an even card revealed on attack is drawn automatically.
That makes top-deck control central to the deck. Brainstorm, Ponder and Sensei’s Divining Top help arrange the next few cards, setting up free spells and improving the chance of drawing useful even-cost cards.
The payoff includes expensive odd-cost cards such as Profane Transfusion, Ethersworn Sphinx and Void Winnower.
Void Winnower and Approach of the Second Sun
Void Winnower is an 11/9 Eldrazi costing nine mana, allowing Yennett to put it onto the battlefield for free. Its ability stops opponents from casting spells with even mana values and prevents them from blocking with creatures that have even mana values.
Approach of the Second Sun provides another carefully constructed win condition. After its first casting, it returns to the library seventh from the top. A second casting from hand wins the game, while Yennett can cast the initial copy from the top of the library without paying its cost.
A second theme: swapping and stealing
The deck is not solely about odd-cost spells. It also uses effects that disrupt ownership, card text and turn order. Exchange of Words swaps the text boxes of two creatures, while Perplexing Chimera can be traded to an opponent for control of a spell.
Inniaz, the Gale Force moves permanents between players, and Shared Fate makes players effectively use cards from one another’s libraries. Aeon Engine reverses the turn order, giving the “Odds and Ends” name a fittingly chaotic second half.
Esper Sentinel is the standout reprint
The deck’s biggest financial draw is Esper Sentinel. Non-foil copies of the one-mana white artefact creature are selling for close to $60. Whenever an opponent casts their first noncreature spell each turn, its controller must pay mana equal to Esper Sentinel’s power or you draw a card.
That makes it a scalable white tax effect with a role similar to Rhystic Study. Esper Sentinel has only appeared in Modern Horizons 2 and on The List, which helps explain why copies are difficult to find.
Sensei’s Divining Top is reportedly the next most valuable reprint, with copies around $40. Its ability to view and reorder the top three cards makes it particularly useful alongside Yennett and Approach of the Second Sun.
Other listed cards include Void Winnower at about $18 and Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth at about $16. Yavimaya makes every land a Forest as well as retaining its other land types, although its inclusion is unusual in a deck that is not green.
Additional cards with notable value include Misleading Signpost, Smuggler’s Share, Venser’s Journal, Aboleth Spawn, Command Beacon and Toxrill, the Corrosive. Most are estimated at between $8 and $15.
No official confirmation yet
Wizards of the Coast has not announced Odds and Ends, so the leaked list is unconfirmed. A release date and price have not been provided either.
The recent Hatsune Miku Commander deck was priced at $150 and offered through a 24-hour print-to-demand ordering window. Wizards described that ordering model as an experiment, rather than a permanent change.
Australian players will need to wait for an official announcement before treating the decklist, price or availability as final. Until then, Odds and Ends remains an intriguing proposal built around Yennett’s odd-mana-value engine.
