Seventeen years after Machinarium introduced players to Josef, Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2. The Czech studio’s hand-drawn adventure will continue the story of the small robot and his companion, Berta.
The original game followed Josef as he tried to prevent the Black Cap Brotherhood from destroying the robot city of Machinarium. Amanita Design has also created Samorost, Botanicula, Chuchel, Creaks and, most recently, Phonopolis.
The surprise announcement arrived with a short video showcasing the sequel’s distinctive illustrated artwork and animation. Players can also visit the Machinarium 2 Steam page and add the game to their wishlist.
“Seventeen years later… The time has come for Machinarium 2.”
— Amanita Design, 8 October 2026
The announcement was shared through Amanita Design’s Bluesky account alongside the original announcement post.
A new journey beyond Machinarium
The sequel begins after Josef and Berta leave Machinarium. Their escape goes badly, however, and the pair crash-land in an area called the Barrens.
There they discover a hidden valley inhabited by two unusual robot tribes. One group lives in a monastery high above the valley, while the other occupies the land below. Both communities are facing a shortage of power, setting the stage for Josef and Berta’s next adventure.
Machinarium 2 will let players control both characters and switch between them whenever needed. Josef and Berta will combine their abilities to solve puzzles, communicating without spoken or written language through pictorial thought bubbles.
Amanita Design’s recognisable style
Amanita Design’s games are known for detailed hand-drawn visuals, expressive animation and soundtracks composed by long-time collaborator Tomáš “Floex” Dvořák. Their limited use of written language also makes the puzzles feel more visual and accessible, while leaving plenty of room for interpretation.
The studio has revived a classic series before. Samorost 3 arrived in 2016, eleven years after the previous entry. That history makes another return for Botanicula or Chuchel an appealing possibility, although neither sequel has been announced.
