A quiet journey through a dangerous world
Inspired by the inhabitants of Moominvalley, Knytt places players in control of its tiny namesake creature. Knytt can jump and scurry, but has no conventional means of fighting back. Progress instead depends on careful movement and quick reactions while exploring towering landscapes, deep caves and other unusual environments.
As the map expands, Knytt encounters eccentric inhabitants and gradually uncovers the world’s hypnotic mysteries. Its gentle presentation creates a relaxing mood, but obstacles, insects and space lasers still demand precision from the vulnerable protagonist.
From freeware experiment to indie landmark
First released in 2006, Knytt grew out of a forum collaboration before spreading across the internet alongside other influential freeware releases, including Cave Story. Its profile eventually reached print gaming publications, and the game went on to receive two follow-ups: Knytt Stories and Knytt Underground on PlayStation 3.
The latter’s Steam community listing has an M rating from the ESRB. Nifflas also created Within A Deep Forest, an adventure starring a powerful magical orb.
What Knytt Classic adds
Knytt Classic is described as a “pixel-perfect” version of the original, produced with assistance from Bit Kid, the studio behind Chasm. Alongside the complete original game, the release adds an “UltraTough” mode and a new mod created by Arvi “Hempuli” Teikari, known for making Baba Is You.
Nifflas’ most recent published game is the critically acclaimed abstract adventure Ynglet. He is also developing Rhythm Doggo, a highly saturated, technicolour project he described as a space where dogs “can hang out with each other”. Like the original, Knytt Classic is free, giving a new generation an easy way to explore this distinctive piece of indie-game history.
