Killzone may be returning to PlayStation

A new report claims that a Killzone remaster is being considered, with Guerrilla Games apparently working alongside an external development studio. The project is reportedly at a very early stage, so its direction and future remain uncertain.

The report identifies People Can Fly as the possible partner, although it does not offer definitive confirmation. The Polish studio is known for Bulletstorm and Outriders, and has also contributed to several Gears of War projects. Read the available report for its current details.

Why the project may be taking time

Guerrilla is also developing Horizon Hunters Gathering, a multiplayer monster-hunting game set in the Horizon universe. The reported plan was for the Killzone remaster to become the studio’s next major focus, but the Horizon spin-off has reportedly been rebooted after negative feedback.

As a result, Guerrilla is said to be prioritising work on that project. This could leave the reported Killzone remaster waiting in the background while the studio gets its current multiplayer game back on track.

Which Killzone game could be remastered?

No specific entry has been confirmed. However, the report suggests that the original game is the most likely candidate. Released for PlayStation 2 in 2004, Killzone was positioned as a major PlayStation first-person shooter, though its reception was mixed and it received a 70/100 Metacritic score.

Killzone 2 made a much stronger impression, earning a 91/100 Metacritic score and collecting numerous awards. That sequel raised expectations for the series and remains an important part of its history.

The first game has already received updated versions. The Killzone Trilogy, released for PlayStation 3 in 2011, remastered the original to support 720p resolution and trophies. A new release would therefore be a second remastering of the debut title rather than its first return in upgraded form.

The series’ last major release

The most recent entry is 2013’s Killzone: Shadow Fall, making a new project potentially the first game in the series in more than a decade. The PlayStation 4 launch title was not especially well received, with criticism aimed at its familiar shooter clichés and sense of being behind the times.

Its online component did have a lengthy run, however. The multiplayer servers remained available until 2022, giving the game several years of continued support after launch.

No announcement or release date yet

Sony and Guerrilla have not officially announced this reported project, and there is currently no release date. With development said to be in its earliest stages, the plans could change or the remaster could be delayed.

For now, the next meaningful update may not arrive until Horizon Hunters Gathering is further along. Until then, the possibility of a new Killzone remains a report rather than a confirmed PlayStation announcement.
