Kaiju No. 8 is returning sooner than expected, although not with the next instalment of its main story. A four-episode original spin-off, Kaiju No. 8: Narumi’s Week at Work, arrives in September while fans continue waiting for the anime’s next major chapter.
The series has built its appeal around a mix of giant-monster action and workplace comedy. It follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old sanitation worker who hopes to join the Defense Force. After a mysterious incident gives him the ability to transform into an exceptionally powerful humanoid kaiju, Kafka is pulled into battles against enormous threats while trying to hide his secret.
Production I.G, known for Ghost in the Shell and Psycho-Pass, produces the anime, with Shigeyuki Miya directing. That combination of high-impact battles, eccentric transformations and character-focused humour has helped make Kaiju No. 8 a prominent modern anime.

What is Narumi’s Week at Work?
The spin-off places Gen Narumi, captain of the Defense Force’s First Division, at its centre. Narumi is one of the organisation’s strongest fighters, but he is also arrogant, easily distracted and far more interested in playing video games than handling the ordinary duties of command.
That contrast shapes the new series. Rather than following Narumi through another enormous battle, the story explores what happens when this brilliant but irresponsible captain has to deal with the less glamorous side of his job.
Narumi’s Week at Work is an original story, not a direct adaptation of Naoya Matsumoto’s manga. Kizuku Watanabe wrote the story draft after working on the comedic Kaiju No. 8: Relax spin-off manga.
The project retains key creative links to the main anime. Miya returns as director, Tetsuya Nishio handles character designs and Production I.G remains in charge of animation. Its smaller scale and lighter tone make it a side story, but it is still built by many of the same people behind the main series.
The four episodes are designed as a comic detour, with each instalment focusing on another part of Narumi’s increasingly chaotic working life. That approach brings the franchise’s underlying office-comedy elements to the front.

The first episode premieres on 5 September. New episodes then follow weekly on 12 September, 19 September and 26 September.

A short return before the main story continues
The September project does not represent the return of the main Kaiju No. 8 anime. Instead, it offers four episodes centred on one of the Defense Force’s most entertaining characters after roughly a year of waiting.
Its premise trades large-scale monster warfare for office problems, video-game distractions and Narumi’s inability to approach routine leadership like a normal captain. Fans wanting more of the series’ comedic side will get that focus while the next major chapter remains pending.
