Isekai anime has three major contenders on air
As of 12 August 2026, fans of isekai anime have an unusually strong choice of simultaneous releases. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation and Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World are all streaming or broadcasting at once.
It recalls the period from 2004 to 2012, when Bleach, Naruto and One Piece were airing on TV Tokyo and Fuji TV at the same time. This current trio offers a similar sense of abundance, even though each series approaches fantasy adventure very differently.
Re:Zero was the latest to join the lineup, with the second cour of its fourth season beginning on Crunchyroll on 12 August.
Re:Zero returns to a familiar structure
The first cour ended on a cliffhanger. Subaru remains affected by memory loss while exploring the Pleiades Watchtower with Emilia, Betty, Ram, Echidna, Julius and Meili. The group is searching for a way to cure the curse affecting Rem and Julius.
Episode 11 subjected Subaru to a series of traumatic deaths reminiscent of the first season. He eventually confronted his trauma and gained the resolve needed to investigate the tower’s mysteries.

Episode 12 opens with Subaru waking again after Return by Death activates. Following his memory loss, he had to relearn the nature of the ability and accept how it could help him protect himself and his companions.
He soon discovers that Meili pushed him down the staircase. She was seeking revenge for her mentor Elsa, who Garfiel killed during the attack on the Roswaal mansion. After a confrontation followed by an emotional reconciliation, Meili is forgiven. The group can now concentrate on the Watchtower’s trials, which are also expected to help restore Subaru’s memories.
This is recognisable Re:Zero territory. The early part of a season establishes an apparently impossible situation, while Subaru gathers information through repeated death and rebirth. That accumulated knowledge and determination then allow him to address the crisis and answer the questions introduced earlier.
Season 3 softened that pattern by giving more attention to its ensemble cast and using Return by Death less heavily. Season 4’s memory-loss storyline instead brings the series back to its traditional formula. The approach remains effective for established fans, but the Pleiades Watchtower setup has been slow. The first 11 episodes could feel painfully drawn out, and episode 12 does little to accelerate the action.
Mushoku Tensei spends too long in its quiet phase
Mushoku Tensei season 3 has a similar pacing problem after a promising opening two episodes. Rudeus is living comfortably in the city of Sharia, where he has built a large family consisting of his two wives, daughter, sister, half-sister, maid and mother, who is gradually recovering from her catatonic state.
Episodes 3 to 7 contain virtually no action. The material could work as fantasy slice-of-life, particularly because the series is often strongest when exploring its characters and relationships. However, seven episodes without major events or meaningful developments is a substantial portion of a season with a limited episode count.
Rudeus’ stability is likely to face a new threat, although the nature of that danger is not yet clear. Eris’ return could create its own conflict once she discovers that Rudeus has two wives. A recently released trailer for the upcoming Chaos Breaker arc does, at least, tease that action is approaching.
Those quiet episodes also leave many mysteries and unresolved plot threads waiting for attention. Condensing the material would have created more room for the story’s remaining developments.
Reincarnated as a Slime leads the 2026 isekai lineup
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has avoided the same pacing concerns. Its fourth season has been divided into five cours, allowing the series to occupy parts of the 2026 and 2027 anime schedules for about 15 months, including breaks.
Despite its more relaxed tone, the season has moved steadily. The first 11 episodes adapted the complete tenth light novel, while the next six episodes had covered most of the eleventh at the time of writing.
Without reading the light novels, it is difficult to judge whether the adaptation is moving too quickly. From an anime-only perspective, though, season 4 continues to balance relaxed slice-of-life scenes, political intrigue and fantasy action.
The three shows are different enough that comparing their pacing is not entirely fair. If only one could be chosen, however, Slime would be the pick. It provides the quiet escapism associated with isekai while maintaining enough conflict and momentum to remain engaging.
Its appeal comes less from intense suffering or emotional distress around Rimuru and more from the broader challenge of governing a monster kingdom. Political decisions, relationships with neighbouring powers and the fragile balance between competing forces give the story its energy.
Why Rimuru currently wins
Having three substantial isekai series available at the same time is a welcome situation for anime viewers. Re:Zero and Mushoku Tensei may yet improve their momentum, particularly with their stories’ next developments on the horizon.
For now, though, the 2026 contest has a clear leader. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime offers the most consistent mix of world-building, political intrigue, gentle escapism and action, making Rimuru Tempest the current king of this isekai season.
