A new Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim mod gives Ikea’s Kallax shelf a magical makeover, complete with a talking performance from Matt Berry.

Released on September 9, Skyrim Creations mod titled “KALLAX STORAGEBORN” is far more ambitious than a simple furniture replacement. The free promotional project is available through Bethesda’s Creations system on Xbox and PC.

It is an unusual piece of gaming news, so keep up with more releases and industry oddities in the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

The adventure begins when the player becomes overencumbered. That triggers a quest leading to an ancient dungeon, where the required components for constructing the Kallax shelf must be gathered.

Once assembled, the shelf receives a magical Allen wrench weapon and comes to life. Matt Berry then supplies a substantial number of voiced lines, rather than appearing as a brief cameo.

Kallax has a dedicated storyline focused on recovering heirlooms and restoring memories from its past. A hour-long playthrough of the Ikea mod from YouTuber ESO shows the quest and its unusual character in action.

What the Kallax companion does

The animated shelf follows the player through Skyrim and can help manage an overloaded inventory by storing surplus items. Stored objects are visibly displayed on the shelf in the game world, giving the feature more personality than a standard storage container.

After unlocking a new shout spell included with the mod, players can summon Kallax whenever needed. The shout itself is the wonderfully direct “IKEA!”

The concept is clearly a marketing stunt, but its combination of a full questline, original animations, practical storage and Matt Berry’s extensive voice work makes it an unusually elaborate one. It also offers a playful reminder that interactive furniture does not have to stop at arcade machines and cabinets.

For players who enjoy unusual hardware-inspired projects, the mod sits neatly alongside DIY arcade kits, arcade parts and other ways to bring game-inspired design into a room. Whether it is worth reinstalling Skyrim depends on how much talking furniture you can handle, but the available footage makes this Kallax companion difficult to dismiss.
