Henry Cavill’s long-running connection with Warhammer 40,000 is expanding into animation. The former Superman actor, who played Geralt during the first three seasons of Netflix’s The Witcher, has been attached to an Amazon project based on the Games Workshop universe since reports first emerged in December 2022.

That earlier project remains a live-action series in development, with Cavill expected to take a leading role. It now appears to be accompanied by a separate animated production, with Cavill serving as an executive producer, as reported by Variety.

What is known about the animated series?

The new show will spin off from the Warhammer 40,000 episode of Amazon’s 2024 video-game anthology series Secret Level. That episode was produced by Tim Miller’s Blur Studios, which is also developing the new series alongside Amazon MGM and Games Workshop.

Dave Wilson, who directed the Secret Level episode, is set to co-create and direct the full series. He will work with John Orloff, known for Band of Brothers. Cavill is listed as an executive producer alongside Miller and Natalie Viscuso, who is also attached to an upcoming Judge Dredd project.

“The response to the Warhammer episode [of Secret Level] was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story.”

Wilson said the animated project will build on the response to the anthology episode, but its wider plot remains under wraps. The details currently available point to elite Space Marines and the Deathwatch pursuing alien enemies.

The live-action project is still waiting

The live-action Amazon production has remained in development for several years. Reports in 2023 indicated that Amazon wanted to explore the licence across both television and film. In 2024, negotiations were said to have concluded, with scriptwriting expected to begin.

Almost two years later, there has been no further news about casting or the start of filming. Cavill has offered no fresh progress updates, while his public Instagram activity has at times been seemingly mostly focused on his new enormous backyard smoker.
