Science creator Hank Green says his main YouTube channel may be paused after acknowledging that his use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools had become excessive. The admission followed criticism of a recent video in which viewers believed he was reading AI-generated wording.
The video was uploaded on July 29 to Complexly, a science and education channel launched in 2017. Complexly is part of a larger network of educational channels and programs established by Hank and his brother John Green nearly 15 years ago.
In the episode, TikToker SoupyTime asked Hank questions that he answered in a deliberately playful but informative style. A later-recorded section attracted particular attention when Green said, “I appreciate the pushback” while discussing a disagreement from earlier in the programme.
Some viewers felt the sentence sounded like an AI-generated response, especially the sort of wording produced after asking a chatbot to revise a script.

As the clip circulated, Green rejected the idea that the disputed line had been written by AI or by him in advance. He said it was an ad lib delivered during filming. However, he also confirmed that he uses ChatGPT for research and conceded that the script had taken on an AI-like quality.
Green acknowledges an unhealthy AI habit
“I think it’s fair to say I was relying too much on [AI] generated notes,” Green wrote. “That’s a thing I’ve been doing, and it’s a bad habit at a time when I’ve overcommitted myself.”
Green later deleted that post, but publicly shared a link to a Reddit discussion containing an image of the original message. In a lengthy reply to the Reddit post, he apologised to fans he felt he had disappointed.
He also explained that he may pause his primary channel and reduce the amount of content he produces. Green described his relationship with generative AI tools such as ChatGPT as unhealthy.
“I need to come to terms with the fact that the level of dopamine I’ve been getting from interacting with LLMs—with doing more and more and more and more—is not healthy for me or good for the world,” Green said. “It is careless, and has disconnected me from where people are on this.”
Green said he had discussed the issue with his wife, who “did not pull any punches”, and with his brother. He added that neither believed his behaviour had been healthy and said he needed to readjust.
Fans respond to the apology
Some commenters remained critical, arguing that Green’s reliance on AI illustrated how the technology can affect even highly intelligent people. Others welcomed his willingness to listen, apologise and reconsider his working habits.
One Reddit commenter said they also struggled to recognise when to slow down rather than continually pursue interests and creative projects, and appreciated Green’s honesty about finding that balance.
Another fan said they did not want Green’s personality to disappear from the centre of his content. Green described that response as “kind-hearted”.
