Spoiler warning: This article discusses both endings of Halo: Campaign Evolved, including its Legendary post-credits scene.

Halo: Campaign Evolved closes with more than the destruction of a Halo ring. Its standard ending echoes the original game, while a bonus scene adds a playful hint about the future of the Xbox series and confirms that one familiar character survived.

Halo: Campaign Evolved’s main ending explained

The regular ending is unlocked by completing the campaign’s original 10 missions on any difficulty. The three bonus missions are not required.

The Halo exploding in the Halo: Campaign Evolved ending.

After escaping the imminent detonation of the Pillar of Autumn, Master Chief and Cortana race away in a Longsword fighter. The Autumn explodes behind them, taking the Halo installation with it.

Master Chief asks whether anyone else survived. Cortana says no, suggesting that only the two of them remain. She then celebrates their victory over the Flood and a Covenant fleet, while arguing that the deaths of UNSC Marines were unavoidable.

“Halo. It’s finished.”

“No. I think we’re just getting started.”

That exchange returns from the original game, although it has been recorded again for Campaign Evolved. In the earlier release, the line clearly left room for a follow-up. Halo 2 arrived three years later, in November 2004, and its reuse here strongly points towards Halo 2: Campaign Evolved.

The Legendary secret ending

Completing the entire game on Legendary unlocks a different scene. In the original title, the equivalent Legendary ending showed Sgt. Johnson wrestling with a Covenant Elite before the pair stopped to watch the Autumn’s destruction. The remake turns that dark gag into an embrace as the explosion surrounds them.

That version was never considered canon, because Sgt. Johnson returned in Halo 2. Campaign Evolved takes a more direct approach to his survival.

In its Legendary scene, Johnson relaxes on a beach while watching footage of the original ending on a tablet. When he spots the Autumn exploding in the distance, he treats it as the signal to leave and boards a Pelican.

Before taking off, Johnson points towards the camera and says:

“See you in the sequel.”

It is a deliberately broad joke, but it also makes the remake’s sequel tease difficult to miss. The scene presents Johnson as alive and ready to return.

343 Guilty Spark also survives

Both endings include one final image after the main action: 343 Guilty Spark drifts through space. The shot confirms that the monitor survived the Halo’s destruction.

Its destination is not stated, but the implication is that Guilty Spark is heading towards the meeting with the Arbiter that helps begin Halo 2.

That leaves two important threads for a possible follow-up: Sgt. Johnson is still in the fight, and Guilty Spark remains active. There has been no official announcement of Halo 2: Campaign Evolved, but the ending makes an Unreal Engine 5 remake appear highly likely. If it happens, a remake of Halo 3 would also be a logical way to complete the original trilogy.

Until then, players can revisit the original remastered campaigns in Halo: Master Chief Collection. The biggest unanswered question for the remake’s next chapter is whether it will also include multiplayer.
