A new Gundam story shaped by modern technology fears

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is being developed as a post-apocalyptic spin-off with a timely concern at its centre: humanity’s uneasy relationship with artificial intelligence. Creator and director Kenji Kamiyama discussed that inspiration in an interview with Variety.

Kamiyama’s central question is whether people can safely control technology they did not create, or whether that technology might ultimately control its users. In the series, alien technology provides the clearest expression of that idea, while the real-world parallel is the growing difficulty of managing AI.

A ruined Earth and an experimental Gundam

The story begins after a hostile extraterrestrial artefact has transformed Earth’s ecosystem and forced humanity into exile. In the aftermath, survivors try to turn the aliens’ own weapons against them.

The series follows Ray Azumi, a war orphan voiced by Takeo Otsuka. Like several young pilots in the wider Gundam tradition, Azumi is pushed into the cockpit of an experimental Gundam, placing him at the centre of the conflict between human survivors and their alien adversaries.

Anti-war themes remain part of the design

AI is not the only contemporary concern informing the project. Kamiyama describes opposition to war as a universal theme, arguing that its meaning and appearance shift with each era. The unease surrounding current conflicts is therefore another influence on the series.

That approach fits Gundam’s long history of examining the human consequences of warfare. The original 1979 series, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, moved away from simple battles against aliens and towards stories about human beings fighting one another, along with the personal cost of war.

Building a world after catastrophe

Kamiyama chose to set RG XARX-ZERO after the disaster rather than narrating the catastrophe itself. His intention is to establish a world with a history that predates the opening episode, allowing viewers to infer what happened instead of receiving every detail through exposition.

Science fiction author EnJoe helped Kamiyama define the setting’s internal logic. Kamiyama praised EnJoe’s ability to rearrange language through mathematical ideas, saying the question of whether to examine meaning became a source of creative inspiration.

A connected future for Gundam fans

The anime also establishes the foundations for Gundam: Rogue Orbit, an accompanying video game set in the same universe decades later. That connection gives the post-disaster setting room to develop beyond the events of Ray Azumi’s story.

Kamiyama is experienced in reworking established fictional worlds. His credits include The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and the Star Wars: Visions short “The Ninth Jedi”. That short later became a full series, with Kamiyama serving as supervising director.

He says adapting a recognised franchise involves deciding what deserves to continue and what should be newly created. The challenge is to surprise audiences without straying from the shared understanding that fans bring to the property.

For Australian arcade enthusiasts who enjoy science-fiction themes and cockpit-style play, RETROCADE’s arcade machines and bartop arcades offer ways to bring that mechanical action into a games room. Those planning a custom project can also explore DIY arcade kits and the arcade parts range.

RG XARX-ZERO’s human-versus-alien premise gives Kamiyama a distinct framework for revisiting Gundam’s enduring questions. Its focus on AI, technological dependence and the changing nature of war could make this one of the franchise’s most directly contemporary stories.
