Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be one of 2026’s biggest game releases—and potentially one of the largest launches in video-game history. That level of attention has produced years of rumours, speculation and fabricated leaks. However, several details that once seemed questionable now appear to have been accurate.

A January 2026 post on the Gaming Leaks And Rumours subreddit collected claims from multiple sources, with some details dating back to 2023. Following an extended trailer released the previous week, along with previews from creators and reporters, several of those claims can now be compared with information officially revealed about GTA 6.

Spoiler warning: the wider Reddit compilation includes one possible early story detail. Readers who want to avoid that potential spoiler should skip don’t click this link to the January list on Reddit.

The GameRoll claims that now look credible

One of the more notable reports came from GameRoll in June 2025. The post said its information came indirectly from a “friend of a Rockstar developer”, rather than from a direct source. Before the information became public, that contact allegedly provided Jason and Lucia’s surnames, suggesting that the source had access to genuine internal knowledge. By September 2026, trailers, interviews and other reporting had revealed much more about GTA 6. Several specific claims from that earlier report appear to match the game’s confirmed or previewed features:

  • The six-star wanted level returns.
  • Players can greet or antagonise non-player characters, similar to the interaction system in Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • The GPS has a rectangular design and uses pink waypoints.
  • Jason can slow down time.
  • NPCs respond to characters carrying guns.
  • Gore and dismemberment are included.
  • Character weight can increase or decrease.
  • Players can carry only a limited number of guns and must use a vehicle trunk to store additional weapons.
  • The story is divided into chapters, as it was in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Not every GTA 6 rumour was right

The same January compilation also contains claims that do not currently appear accurate. These include the suggestion that the map would feature three large islands and that more than 1,000 locations would be enterable. GTA 6 seems set to include a substantial number of interiors, but there is not enough evidence to support the 1,000-plus figure.

Other predictions were less meaningful because they were relatively easy guesses based on Rockstar’s previous open-world games. Claims that the map would be an island, or that the game would include a basketball mini-game, fall into that category.

What these old leaks really show

The GameRoll claims are particularly interesting because many readers initially dismissed them as wishful thinking: a fan-made combination of Red Dead Redemption 2’s realism and Grand Theft Auto’s established formula. Looking back a year later, however, several of the specific details line up with what has since been shown or reported about GTA 6.

That does not make every post on social media trustworthy. Unverified claims about upcoming games can still be false, exaggerated or the result of lucky guesses. The useful approach is to assess each detail separately and compare it with official trailers, interviews and reliable previews.
