The second Godzilla Minus Zero trailer arrived less than a day after the film’s New York Comic Con panel, offering another look at the sequel’s uneasy post-war world. It also strengthens the suggestion that Godzilla may not be humanity’s only major threat.

A storm, a survivor and Godzilla’s atomic breath

The trailer opens with a doctor questioning how Noriko could have survived the events of Godzilla Minus One. The footage then cuts to Koichi flying through a supernatural storm as entire houses are lifted into the air.

A rapid sequence follows, showing frightened civilians running, characters discussing the approaching danger and mounting panic across the community. The trailer ends with Godzilla unleashing a huge atomic breath attack.

For fans who enjoy monster cinema and arcade-style action, the escalating spectacle has the same visual energy found in classic arcade news and gaming coverage.

What could the new threat be?

The trailer description refers to “a new threat”, but no second creature is shown clearly. Instead, the footage appears to leave clues through the attacks themselves.

Godzilla’s attacks retain the blue colouring seen in Godzilla Minus One. Other beams strike civilians and destroy a bomb, appearing more yellow and lightning-like than Godzilla’s familiar atomic breath. That contrast may point towards a different monster or power, although the trailer does not confirm its identity.

Gidorah returns to the Godzilla universe

Comments from the filmmakers at New York Comic Con indicate that Gidorah has a significant role in Godzilla Minus Zero. The three-headed monster has been one of the franchise’s most recognisable characters since debuting in 1964, and has battled Godzilla across numerous films.

Gidorah was most recently seen in the 2019 American production Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This new version will give Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki an opportunity to reinterpret the character within the series’ post-World War II setting.

Yamazaki directed the widely praised first film, making the sequel’s larger monster conflict an appealing prospect for fans who want to see it on the biggest screen available. Its visual scale should also appeal to readers comparing cinema spectacle with the impact of a full-size arcade machine cabinet.

Australian release date

Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 6 November.

While the trailer keeps the identity of the new threat deliberately obscured, its storm imagery, unusual energy beams and Gidorah connection suggest that Godzilla’s next battle could be far more complicated than a single-monster rampage.
