Double Fine is preparing a return to its experimental roots after separating from Microsoft, announcing a new edition of its Amnesia Fortnight game-jam series. The project will combine game development, crowdfunding and a documentary.

Amnesia Fortnight 2026 puts fans in the director’s chair
The Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Kickstarter campaign is titled Indie Reboot: A Double Fine Productions Game Jam, Documentary and Kickstarter Campaign. It begins on 31 August 2026 and continues through September.
Backers will help decide which ideas move forward. The selected concepts will become four new prototypes, followed by a vote to determine which projects are developed into a “real (small) game”. Double Fine chief executive Tim Schafer announced the plan during the Kinda Funny podcast.
A game jam with a proven creative history
Double Fine first livestreamed one of its two-week game jams in 2012, with further events taking place in 2014, 2017 and 2019. The 2026 edition will be the studio’s first livestreamed game jam since 2019.
Earlier prototypes have sometimes been released through Humble. The format has also produced ideas that became full games, including Costume Quest, Spacebase DF-9 and Headlander. Other experiments have contributed to existing titles, such as the Compton’s Cookout level in Psychonauts 2.

Independence follows Xbox layoffs
The announcement comes after Double Fine was affected by Xbox’s major round of layoffs and divestments in July 2026. The studio became independent from Microsoft, then cut 23 positions from a workforce of approximately 90 people.
“Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action,” Schafer said in a statement announcing the layoffs.
Double Fine was founded in 2000 and has created games including Psychonauts, Psychonauts 2, Brutal Legend and Iron Brigade. Before Microsoft acquired the studio in 2019, successful Kickstarter campaigns for Broken Age and Psychonauts 2 helped establish crowdfunding as a major force in video-game development.
What happens next
The upcoming event gives Double Fine a way to return to small-scale experimentation while involving its community in the selection process. Its documentary will be filmed by 2 Player Productions, the team previously associated with the Psychodyssey documentary.
Whether any 2026 prototype eventually grows into a larger release remains to be seen. For arcade enthusiasts considering creative home projects, RETROCADE’s DIY arcade kits and arcade cabinet plans offer practical ways to explore similar hands-on experimentation.
