Curry Barker is returning to YouTube before his next feature film. The director behind Obsession will release a new short, Mama Bear, just ahead of Halloween.
Barker is also developing Anything but Ghosts, a comedy-horror film scheduled for release in 2027. Before that project reaches audiences, Mama Bear gives him a chance to revisit the online filmmaking work that helped build his audience.
A return to Barker’s YouTube beginnings
Before becoming widely recognised for directing Obsession, the Alabama-born filmmaker published sketches and short films on YouTube with Cooper Tomlinson, who played Ian in Obsession.
The pair attracted millions of viewers and the attention of production companies through low-budget projects including The Chair and Milk & Serial. For more entertainment and gaming updates, browse the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.
When does Mama Bear premiere?
Mama Bear is being made in partnership with Windows and is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 29 at 11:30 a.m. EDT. The release comes as Barker’s next major project was expected to be Anything but Ghosts, which has received Seth Rogen’s approval.
What to expect from the new short
The cast includes Katie Sarife, known for Annabelle Comes Home, alongside Jon Lee Richardson, Ericka Kreuz and Joshua Snyder.
Casting information suggests that one character will have a doppelgänger, although the film’s wider themes remain undisclosed. Barker’s short films commonly combine comedy and horror, and the timing of this release makes a horror-leaning story a reasonable possibility without confirming its plot.
