Crimson Desert is expanding beyond its already busy open-world adventure. Pearl Abyss has unveiled Charting the Unknown, the game’s first major expansion, during Sony’s State of Play showcase.

The announcement trailer suggests that the next chapter will push Pywel into even stranger territory, mixing fantasy adventure with steampunk machinery, seafaring, advanced technology and playful side activities. For more gaming news, visit the RETROCADE Arcade Blog.

A new journey beyond the crimson desert

The expansion’s story follows Kliff, Oongka and Damiane as they search for their purpose and try to determine their futures. Their expedition takes place as unrest spreads through Pywel, forcing each character to confront dangerous trials and choose a path forward.

“Reclaim power and reach beyond—into the unknown.”

The trailer hints at a hidden land beyond the crimson desert, a region where many people fell long ago. Witches warn that whispers of darkness are becoming stronger, setting up a mysterious continuation of the base game’s story.

What the first trailer shows

Rather than presenting a single consistent fantasy setting, the footage jumps between a remarkable range of ideas. Kliff appears to build a home and rearrange furniture in a city, kneel to propose to a witch, take on the role of a pirate, ride a dragon and explore underwater in old-fashioned scuba equipment fitted with a jetpack.

Other scenes feature a huge metal vessel and a character sprinting across the surface of the water. The expansion also includes animal-inspired machines, including dragon, squid and crab designs. The crab is shown firing laser beams.

Release date and pre-order bonus

Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown is scheduled to launch on 15 October 2026. Early 20th-century-style scuba-diving equipment will be offered as a pre-order bonus.

The trailer’s unusual combination of medieval cities, galleons, robots and steampunk technology may point to a rupture in time and space. It may instead simply reflect the game’s willingness to embrace wildly different ideas. The full explanation is still to come.

For readers building a dedicated gaming setup, RETROCADE’s arcade machines can complement a modern RPG collection, while the virtual pinball range offers another way to bring interactive entertainment into an Australian games room.
